We’re proud of our renowned basketball program and are excited to see the legends in the making at La Salle today.

With the new season about to start, we want to keep you connected to it. Come out to our Alumni Basketball Night on Friday, January 16th. It’ll be a fun night of basketball and memories.

Storied LaSalle program looking for next stars

BY ROBERT ELKIN  |  Let’s turn the clock back in high school basketball history and ask ourselves who are some of the greatest players ever to come out of the Catholic High School Athletic Association of New York City.

There are too many great ones to single out anyone. However, one hoop buff can’t leave out two players who eventually starred in the National Basketball Association where they made names for themselves. And they both played in different eras.

They are guard Dick McGuire and forward Ron Artest, now known as Metta World Peace. The latter played for six teams in the NBA, including the New York Knicks. And they both came out of LaSalle Academy.

But one can’t forget Jarrel Joye, the school’s all-time leading scorer, and Shammgod Wells, and still another ex-LaSalle sensation, John Candelaria, who was more known for his baseball ability than for basketball. Probably, Candaleria is the greatest multiple-sports athlete produced at LaSalle, for he excelled in basketball, too.

Is there another great player on the way? Right now there aren’t any marquee players on the roster of the boy’s varsity basketball team at LaSalle. They are all about evenly matched. But one never knows if a star is in the making.

“We hope that another All-American or even just a great player is on the way,” said Jerome Pannell, in his first year as head varsity coach at LaSalle, speaking before a recent afternoon practice session. “We are really young and we have a deep freshman class.

“We hope again that we can produce high-level student-athletes, and multiple-sports athletes, and guys who can go to the next level and have great success, as well.”

Pannell’s current starting roster includes seniors Brian Bass and Stephon Riley, Junior Traigan James and Sophomores J’ne Williams and Bryce Council.

Last winter, Bass scored at a 20-point-a-game clip and Riley went for about nine rebounds a game last winter. Including Bass, who is an All-City candidate, the Cardinals return four players from last year’s team.

“Guard play is a major strength on this year’s team,” said Pannell, a graduate of Cathedral Prep High School and City College of New York.

Regarding their offense, he said, “We have a number of shooters. Shooting and team quickness are our other strengths. And our taller players have good speed and are versatile.

“Defensively, we should be tough,” he added. “We’ll most likely play man-to-man defense. Our weakness is that we turn the ball over too much. Our youth can be a weakness. We are inexperienced on the varsity level. As a team we are coming together.”

Despite having an extensive background coaching basketball at different levels and organizations and working at summer camps, Pannell is in his first year of coaching a high school varsity basketball team.

“Coaching is still very new,” said Pannell, 36. “It’s different because you are running an entire program, as opposed to organizing one team. It’s trying to establish a new foundation…and not just rebuilding. It’s trying to make something sustainable in terms of rebuilding.”

Pannell named Bass and swingman Adrian Corbin as co-captains.

“Hearing that players like Ron Artest came out of LaSalle induced me to come here,” said Bass.

“I think that we’ll go far this year,” Corbin added.

“We have a good group of kids who want to learn,” Pannell summed up. “I’m excited.”

Head Start Holiday Party

LSA Varsity @ Brooklyn United Head Start Christmas Party (7)LSA Varsity @ Brooklyn United Head Start Christmas Party (8)LSA Varsity @ Brooklyn United Head Start Christmas Party (5)

In the fall of 2009, one of the SSP mentors of a sophomore student proposed a service opportunity for her student and some of his classmates. The student’s mother worked in a Head Start program in Brooklyn. The mentor proposed that she and the students throw a holiday party for the children of the program. The mentor gathered donated gifts from her colleagues, wrapped them, planned food and arts and crafts for the children, and asked our boys to come and help run the party.  It was a great success and the students (of all ages) had a wonderful time. La Salle students pair up with the children and help serve them food, play with them, and help them with the arts and crafts. Sometimes, some dancing takes place as well. We have turned this into a basketball team event. The mentor’s student graduated in 2012. However, she did not want this to end, and asked that La Salle continue to partner with her. We have gone each December since 2009. It provides a bonding experience for the team as well as an opportunity to give back to the community. As is the motto in many Lasallian schools, our students should “Enter to Learn, and Leave to Serve”.  This is one more opportunity for this to happen. We are grateful to this mentor for her commitment to service and to La Salle Academy.

College Financial Aid Night – Jan 13th @ 6:30pm

On Tuesday, January 13th, at 6:30 PM, we will be hosting our College Financial Aid Night.  Mr. James Murphy, an alum of LSA and an expert in the area of college financial aid, will be here to explain the process and answer all questions. Any student that is looking to receive any form of financial aid for college must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). This can be complicated and confusing for many families. Although the FAFSA cannot be submitted before January 1, 2015 for those looking for aid for the fall of 2015, (most colleges have a FAFSA submission deadline in February or March, but the sooner this is submitted, the better)  we recommend that parents begin working on the process now. Go to the FAFSA website (www.fafsa.ed.gov), create an account, and begin looking at what information you will need to provide. This will allow you to create a list of questions to bring with you to Financial Aid Night on January 13th. We hope that you will make it a point to be there

Exciting Alumni Day at Alma Mater

La Salle Academy held its First Annual Alumni Day on Saturday, November 15th, at its original home on Second Street.

The day was an arousing success as more than 200 members of our alumni, faculty, family, friends and students attended the event to reminisce about La Salle’s glorious past and reconnect with alma mater.

Attendees enjoyed a day of food from the Lower East Side, music that spanned the decades, and classroom tours. Many alumni brought their families along to give them a glimpse of their high school years.

La Salle plans to bring this celebratory event back every November to give alumni the chance to reunite and reminisce. We hope to see you next year!

Soccer team ends season with tough loss to St. Raymond’s

The La Salle Varsity Soccer Team’s season can be described as a season of highs and lows. With a young team, growing pains were to be expected. The 20-member team included seven sophomores and seven freshmen.

IMG_0008

In the beginning of the season we experienced a number of tough losses that seemed like they could have gone either way. As the season progressed and they became more accustomed to one another, the boys really came together and started improving their game.

The highlight of our season was a stretch in the latter half of the year when we won three out of four games, including a 1-0 defeat at always-tough Kennedy Catholic and an 8-0 defeat against St. Edmund’s.

We went into the playoffs feeling very good about ourselves coming off of these victories. But we were ultimately eliminated after a hard fought game against St. Raymond’s, losing 2-1 in double overtime.

The boys were dejected but it should in no way take away from the growth and development that we saw on the field this season. Our young players gained extremely valuable knowledge and playing time that will be vital in the coming years.

Paulo De Souza, senior goalkeeper, was outstanding all year long and has earned himself All-League and potentially All-City honors. Sophomore Jason Criollo, a forward, earned himself All-League honors as well while leading the team with 7 goals on the season. Ultimately, the season did not end the way we wanted it to but the future is extremely bright for the soccer team here at La Salle Academy.—Brian Pally.

20th Annual Cardinal Classic Golf Outing a Great Success!

20th Annual Cardinal Classic Golf Outing a Great Success!

On October 9, La Salle Academy held its 20th Annual Cardinal Classic Golf Outing at the beautiful North Hills Country Club in Manhasset, NY.

As golfing legend Arnold Palmer famously said, “The most rewarding things in life are often the ones that look like they cannot be done.”

Well, thanks to the Christian Brothers, their lay and religious collaborators, and our supporters, we have been leading the way in Catholic education in New York City for over 167 years!

Some say Catholic schools are becoming like the dinosaurs; collectively, we say it is thriving in our classrooms and athletic fields, in our ministry and clubs!

Since its inception in 1994, the Cardinal Classic has raised nearly $1 million to help academically gifted, but financially disadvantaged young men receive a Lasallian education. It is through the mission and ministry of this great school that is enriched and advanced by each graduate, supporter and friend who has been touched by the spirit of Saint John Baptist De La Salle. Membership in this always-growing community of dedicated people requires an open and generous heart.

At the Cardinal Classic each year, we remember our brother and alumnus, Ray Downey ’55 whose life and death exemplified this generosity and faith. Like so many of his brother La Salle graduates, Ray’s commitment to service made a difference in this world. The La Salle community honors and remembers him as we presented the Annual Deputy Chief Raymond Downey Memorial Award to the foursome with the best score. This year, our winners were Tony Celano, Rod DeLuca, Howard Poretsky, and Martin Rodini, all friends of La Salle.

We hope that you will join us next year at our 21st Annual Cardinal Classic Golf Outing!
