La Salle Students Enjoy a Special Christmas Assembly

Thursday, December 21, 2017 – On the last day before a much-anticipated Christmas break, La Salle students celebrated Mass together and enjoyed an assembly with entertainment by visitors as well as a few of their classmates. If the La Salle community was not in the Christmas spirit before, they are now.

Opening the assembly were the Backtrack Vocals, a New-York-City-based Acapella group who began their fame on YouTube. They captivated the student body with Christmas songs such as “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.”

Click here for a clip of one of their performances:  https://www.facebook.com/LaSalleAcademy.NYC/videos/1837816412903296/

Next up was a returning visitor to La Salle Academy, Camrus Johnson. Camrus is a jack-of-all-trades. An actor, singer, and writer based in New York City, Camrus brought his original style to the students of La Salle on Thursday morning. He started off with his interpretation of “T’was the Night Before Christmas.”

Before Camrus returned to the stage, four La Salle Academy students performed original poems about the Christmas season. Each spoke about different perspectives during the holiday season.

Returning to the stage after insightful performances by La Salle students, Camrus Johnson performed his rendition of “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” engaging the students with a sing-along and adding the word, “Swag” after the line, “Five Golden Rings.”

The final performance came from the La Salle Academy Band and Chorus. La Salle would like to thank all the performers who made the last morning before Christmas vacation an especially spirited day.

Christian Brother Provincial Visits La Salle Academy

Monday, November 20, 2017 – Brother Dennis Lee, the Provincial of the Brothers of the Christian School District of Eastern North America (DENA), was generous enough to spend the entire day at La Salle on Monday, November 20th.  Brother Dennis met with our senior leadership, addressed our student body in full assembly and stayed quite late for the Board of Trustees’ Meeting.

During the Assembly, a few La Salle Academy students presented on what they are thankful for this year. Following the student presentations, Brother Dennis educated our students about the Lasallian association. Our students were “all ears” as the Provincial spoke about the importance of coming together in unity with one another despite the differences we may have.

Brother Dennis’ show of faith in this school and it’s dynamic trajectory at the present was made quite clear by his decision to spend the day at La Salle a mere two months into his new leadership term, which is quite a statement indeed. La Salle is grateful for his leadership, and his love of our boys and our very own La Salle Academy mission.

La Salle Soccer: Shut out & Knocked out of the Playoffs

Wednesday, November 1, 2017, Brooklyn, NY – The La Salle Cardinals took a tough loss as they were shut out and knocked out of the 2017 CHSAA Soccer playoffs by virtue of a tough 2-0 loss to the South division’s #1 seed, Cathedral Prep at Aviator Sports Complex.  La Salle’s ends with a final record of 6-8-1 on the year.

The Cardinals had trouble building an offense all game and unfortunately, the shots they got just missed the mark.

We would like to thank this year’s soccer seniors for the commitment and dedication to La Salle Academy and the Cardinals Soccer program!

Cardinal Dolan Celebrates Mass at La Salle Academy

CARDINAL DOLAN CELEBRATES ALL SAINTS DAY MASS,

BLESSES CHAPEL AT LA SALLE ACADEMY

East Village, N.Y., November 1, 2017 – La Salle Academy welcomed His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan, Archbishop of New York, to its Sixth Street campus this morning to celebrate Mass for All Saints Day. La Salle’s gymnasium was transformed into a chapel for a crowd of 450 attendees, including students, faculty, staff, alumni, benefactors and the Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese, Dr. Timothy McNiff.

“I thank La Salle Academy for the magnificent example of a splendid Catholic education that is going on here,” Cardinal Dolan said, acknowledging the congregation during his homily. Cardinal Dolan mentioned that Dr. McNiff shares his admiration for the school.

“You have done a great job here, and it really gives us all hope that things can go well, that great schools like this can continue to succeed. It takes a lot of determination and hope to do what you have done here and turn it all around,” said Cardinal Dolan. “The path was – and is – not easy. It takes a lot of trust and faith to get through things. La Salle is flourishing now with a hopeful future. You got it right.”

Following the Mass, Cardinal Dolan blessed the new school Chapel that has been incorporated into La Salle’s third floor expansion, visited with alumni and students at a lovely breakfast reception and took a tour of the school. “Wonderful,” “gritty,” and “hardworking” were just a few of the words Cardinal Dolan used to describe the community at La Salle.

La Salle Soccer Rolls into 2nd Round of Playoffs with Win over Bishop Loughlin

Monday, October 30, 2017, Queens, NY – It took overtime for La Salle Academy to earn the victory,  a minute into the extra session, defeating Bishop Loughlin, 2-1 at Juniper Valley Park in the first round of the 2017 CHSAA “B” Soccer Playoffs.  The Cardinals (North #4 seed) survived and move into Wednesday’s quarter-final game against Cathedral Prep (South #1 seed).

Ernesto Castelan, saved the day in OT taking a crossing pass from Ricardo Rosas and burying his shot top shelf, dead center for the winner.  That goal, his second of the game and 16th of the season, rescued what had been, up until that point, an inconsistent performance by La Salle against the South #5 seed.   The first half played without any emotion ended 0-0 without either team being able to sustain any real scoring chances.

In the second half, playing into the wind, Castelan scored his first goal off long ball that he was able to trickle past Loughlin’s goalkeeper into the net.  However, the Lions, roared back with a penalty kick that was just hard enough of LSA’s keeper Garcia for the equalizer.

Next Match:  Wednesday, November 1st.  CHSAA “B” Soccer Playoffs Quarter-Final against Cathedral Prep.  The match is set for a 6:00pm kickoff at Aviator Field in Brooklyn.

La Salle Soccer: Cardinals Fall Short to Sacred Heart in Season Finale

Wednesday, October 25, 2017, Yonkers, NY – In their final tune-up before the playoffs, the La Salle Cardinals came out flat in the second half and suffered a 5-2 loss to Sacred Heart at Fleming Park in Yonkers.  With the loss, the Cardinals finished the regular season at 5-7-1, in fourth place in the CHSAA “B” Division North, and will host a 1st round playoff game on Monday, October 30th.

John Heras scored his fourth goal of the season and Ernesto Castelan contributed his team leading 14th goal of the season but it wasn’t enough to overcome an effective Sacred Heart offense.

Next Match:  The 2017 CHSAA “B” Soccer Playoffs begin on Monday, October 30th. La Salle will host the #5 seed from the South Division, the Bishop Loughlin Lions.  The match is set for a 3:00pm kickoff at Field #44 on Randall’s Island.

La Salle takes over NYC over the Weekend!

This weekend La Salle Academy was out in full force throughout New York City.

On Saturday, October 21st, we welcomed 650 prospective students, parents, grandparents, and siblings to our campus on 215 E 6th Street for our annual Open House. Potential future Cardinals in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade and their families began lining up at our doors at 9:40 am, twenty minutes before our scheduled start time of 10:00 am, to visit La Salle. Attendees had the opportunity to explore the school – now three full floors of classroom space! – meet current students, parents and alumni, and even speak with the full faculty and staff on board at La Salle about what our 170-year institution will provide for their sons that other schools won’t be able to and why it truly is the next best step in their boys’ academic careers. A special thank you to the Parents Association and alumni for volunteering their time for this major recruitment event!

Saturday night, La Salle attended the Michael T. Carroll Yorkville 9/11 Memorial Dinner Dance at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church in memory of alumnus Michael Carroll from La Salle’s class of 1980. This fundraiser – with close to 300 attendees –  is done each year in honor of Michael Carroll, FDNY, LaSalle Class of 1980, who was killed that fateful day on 9/11 at the World Trade Center. Two of our students who receive the scholarships in his name attended to thank the guests for their continued support and scholarship money they provide to the young men at La Salle. The pictures below are of all the LaSalle alumni who come back to support the event every year and remember their friend.

And the appearances didn’t stop!

Bright and early on Sunday morning, four of La Salle’s Campus Ministry students along with Campus Minister Terence McCorry, Music Director Jon Abrams and the Development Team traveled to Our Lady of Angels Chapel at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington for the 2nd Annual William F. DeSpagna ’46 Memorial Mass to remember deceased alumni, family and friends of La Salle. About 40 guests, inclusive of alumni and their families and friends of La Salle attended the Mass and breakfast reception that followed.

We wound down the weekend with a trip to Staten Island to attend St. Peter Secondary School’s Centennial Dinner on Sunday night. St. Peter’s is one of Lasallian partner schools, and we came to provide support to “the family” out in Staten Island. Eight students sauntered around cocktail hour, meeting every Brother Brother Dennis Lee, both Auxiliary Provincials (Brother Thomas Casey and Brother Rich Galvin), Brothers on our Board like Brother Francis (below) and of course, His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan, who will be visiting La Salle in a little over a week to celebrate Mass for All Saint’s Day.

One student said to His Eminence, “We need more space at La Salle… will you help us?” to which he responded, “I will try my hardest. You guys are hard to say no to.”

There is no rest for the weary here at La Salle Academy. More space at 6th Street means more boys entering La Salle in the fall which means more need for scholarships. We are La Salle and we never stop.

Principal Kerry Conroy Receives the Bassen Service Award

After nearly two decades of service at La Salle Academy, Principal/Vice President Conroy has been awarded the Bassen Service Award on Saturday, September 30th during a ceremony at La Salle University. A busload of faculty, staff and students traveled to Philadelphia to support Ms. Conroy.

Beginning as a Lasallian Volunteer and serving as the campus minister, tutor, and freshmen religion teacher, Ms. Conroy returned to La Salle Academy shortly after her years of service to serve the Lasallian young men once again as a guidance counselor. Soon after that, Ms. Conroy was promoted to Director of Guidance and most recently served as La Salle Academy’s Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs. Committed to Catholic education in the Lasallian tradition, Ms. Conroy was named Principal of La Salle Academy in June 2016 and was given the additional title of Academic/Student Affairs in February 2017 .

The Bassen Service Award was named in honor of Brother Christopher Bassen, FSC (1942-2006). This award recognizes an alumnus of the Lasallian Volunteers who has continued a life of service since their volunteer year(s). Brother Chris lived and breathed De La Salle’s mission of service to the poor. Chris nourished and made real his dream of the Lasallian Educational Opportunities (L.E.O.) Center in Oakland, CA. L.E.O. continues to provide educational opportunity to “at-risk” youth and adults who may otherwise not receive the assistance, guidance and resources they need. The recipient of this award is an alumnus of the Lasallian Volunteer program who has incorporated the value of Lasallian service to the poor into the fabric of his/her life.

Congratulations, Ms. Conroy!

What a September for La Salle!

September was a busy month for La Salle Academy! We started the month by kicking off the 2017-18 academic year and welcoming 352 students to our halls and additional third floor of our building.

To celebrate this expansion of La Salle to the third floor of our school building, we held a ribbon cutting ceremony on Monday, September 18th. Members of the Board of Trustees and other special guests graced our halls, taking in the new improvements integrated at our 6th Street campus.

Chairman of the Board, Salvatore LaRocca ’82 (left), and La Salle Academy students
cut the ceremonial ribbon to celebrate the third floor expansion.

One of these special guests was Dr. Timothy McNiff, the Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of New York.

“The decision makers in education that are closer to the school are the ones to make the best decisions,” McNiff said. “That’s why the governance structure here is not run out of my office. It is run by a board with incredible leadership coming out of administration.”

“Why is this school doing so well?” Dr. McNiff asked. “Why do I think of La Salle as a flagship for Catholic education in New York City? Because of the board, these ladies and gentlemen, and the local leadership here.”

He concluded, “I come to say congratulations to you and your board, and an incredible group of young men that we’re really proud of.”

Dr. Timothy McNiff speaks to students,
alumni and friends at the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Later that week, on Thursday, September 21st, we hosted our 23rd Annual Cardinal Classic Golf Outing at the Village Club of Sands Point. We honored alumni Robert J. Welsh from the class of 1955 and Martin J. Cottingham from the class of 1988 for their commitment to La Salle Academy over the years. We also posthumously paid tribute to James W. Prendergast for his passion and dedication to La Salle and the outing itself.

Nikko Olvera ’18 presents Robert J. Welsh ’55 and Martin J. Cottingham ’88 their 2017 Brother Bruno Cajetan Awards at the 23rd Annual Cardinal Classic Golf Outing Reception.

Last but certainly not least, we celebrated our recently elected Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Salvatore LaRocca ’82, President of Global Partnerships at the NBA, with a lovely reception at The Water Club in Manhattan on September 26th. Alumni from a range of years attended, along with a number of close friends of La Salle. “The momentum we have is extraordinary,” LaRocca said of the La Salle Academy community. “Being Chairman of the Board is an honor I place very high on my list; I hope I don’t disappoint.”

EDITOR’S REPORT

Space Increase the Latest Sign of Good Things Happening at La Salle

By John Woods

Left, Professor George Delagrammatikas from The Cooper Union demonstrates a STEM activity for La Salle Academy students, who participate in five programs at The Cooper Union. Right, La Salle’s varsity baseball squad was one of five Cardinals’ teams to win city championships last year.

In 1848, La Salle Academy became the first American school founded by the De La Salle Christian Brothers. Even that status was not a guarantee the boys’ high school would last forever, though. With enrollment waning a decade ago, the Christian Brothers made the difficult decision to move La Salle from its East Second Street home into the St. George Academy building four blocks north, where it leases space.

In many ways it was not an easy choice, but a necessary one, said Dr. Catherine Guerriero, who begins her fourth year as La Salle’s president in September. The opening of the school year will also coincide with an expansion of La Salle’s footprint in the building from two floors to three, and a host of other progress at the school.

The increased space “dramatically changes things,” Dr. Guerriero said. She spoke about the 10 new classrooms, plus a library, a chapel and a new music room for the resuscitated La Salle Band, the stuff of legend in the 1950s and 1960s before it went away only to return last September.

New classroom space is dearly needed. For the past two years, La Salle had waiting lists of 50 to 70 students, with freshman enrollment capped at 100 because “it’s all the desks I had,” Dr. Guerriero said. Total enrollment is now 375 students.

The students’ overall academic standing has improved dramatically in recent years from a C-plus to A-minus, she said. And they still come from across the city’s five boroughs, with two-thirds from Manhattan and the Bronx, almost another 30 percent from Brooklyn and Queens, as well as a smattering from Staten Island, Westchester, Long Island and New Jersey. Just over half the students are Hispanic and nearly one-quarter are African-American, with the remainder pretty evenly divided among Caucasians, Asians and multi-racial students.

In the 2016-2017 year, the Cardinals won five city sports championships for the first time, as well as a state federation crown in basketball.

As she describes the school’s leadership, Dr. Guerriero says she likes the “deep bench” she sees. Second-year principal Kerry Conroy is a 22-year school veteran who earlier served as assistant principal for academic affairs and guidance department chair. Other top performers are Mary Kenny, senior vice president of finance and administration, and Ismini Scouras, vice president for institutional advancement. The school raises enough money each year to allow for a needs-blind admissions process, Dr. Guerriero said

The school’s board of trustees has a new chairman, Salvatore LaRocca, class of 1982, the vice president of global partnerships for the National Basketball Association.

Two De La Salle Brothers are currently on the faculty: Brother Anwar Martinez, F.S.C., is chairman of the religion department, and Brother Paul Cillo, F.S.C., is a religion teacher. “We’d love to have 20,” Dr. Guerriero said.

It should also be quickly noted that La Salle has quadrupled its after-school programs and clubs to 45 in recent years. It also has partnerships in place with a number of colleges including The Cooper Union, La Salle University in Philadelphia, Manhattan College and New York University.

Students are the best proof of a school’s success. This week I had a chance to speak by phone with two of La Salle’s upperclassmen, Daniel Baker, who will be a senior, and Mark Bermeo, who is entering junior year.

Daniel is a straight-A student planning to take AP government, English and calculus courses. He has been involved in La Salle Works, the school’s vigorous internship and apprenticeship program, since he was a freshman. Since January, he’s had an internship with the Leahey & Johnson law firm. “Being able to see the lawyers do their work, and to learn how to communicate like a lawyer, it’s been one of the best experiences I’ve ever had,” said Daniel, who has an interest in business and law and is exploring the possibility of attending Georgetown University.

He also said he recently encouraged a younger friend who is searching for a high school to give La Salle a good look. “La Salle offers students opportunities I wouldn’t have gotten if I didn’t come here,” said Daniel, who has commuted to La Salle from Middletown for the past year.

Mark is spending six weeks this summer in a STEM partnership program with The Cooper Union’s Albert Nerken School of Engineering located right in La Salle’s neighborhood. He’s working with four other students and a teaching assistant to develop a music utility app.

“It’s been a pretty intensive experience. It’s a lot of coding,” said Mark, who added his academic interests normally run more toward history.

Talk to Dr. Guerriero long enough and you start to believe that anything is possible at La Salle. The school’s narrative “gives lie to the story that this can’t be done,” she said.

On Monday, Sept. 18, the ceremonial ribbon will be cut on the third floor expansion, and Cardinal Dolan will come by to visit and celebrate Mass Nov. 1.

“It’s an exciting time at La Salle,” Dr. Guerriero said.

La Salle on the Road

This summer, La Salle Academy’s Development Team traveled to Albany and Breezy Point, NY to participate in two special alumni receptions. Board Trustee Kevin Leyden ’74 hosted our first Albany Alumni Reception on July 20th at his home in Glenmont, NY and Board Trustee Martin J. Cottingham ’88 hosted the 3rd Annual Breezy Point Summer Soirée on August 2nd at his home in Breezy Point, NY.

The La Salle “boys” who attended the Albany reception spanned every decade – inclusive of graduates from ’58, ’62, ’74, and ’83! Attendees shared their fondest memories from their years on 2nd Street and we updated them real-time on the news of La Salle.

Marty and his classmates from the ‘80s enjoyed a fun-filled summer night by the beach complete with a visit from special guest, Br. Frank Byrne, FSC. The future of La Salle was discussed, like our plans to move home to 2nd Street and our upcoming Cardinal Classic Golf Outing on September 21st, at which Marty will be honored for his dedication and commitment to his alma mater.

These two alumni receptions are a small part of a series of trips that Dr. Guerriero and the La Salle Development Team take throughout the year. Our destinations span from Long Island and New Jersey all the way to Florida and California! No matter how large or small, near or far, we are always grateful for the opportunity to connect with you and your classmates on a personal level.

If you’re interested in hosting a La Salle Academy Alumni Reception in your home or area, please call the Development Office at 212-475-8940 ext. 204 or send an email to [email protected].

Thank you for your support of La Salle Academy!

La Salle Academy Announces Major Expansion

July 13, 2017 –

Dear La Salle Academy Community:
In a move that bucks the trend of most Catholic high schools across the country, La Salle Academy is embarking on a major expansion plan that includes occupying the third floor at the 6th street campus.

We are increasing our school space to a full one-third more capacity and will now populate the 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors at our school building. Our student body – capped at about 100 per grade due to the space constraints –can now be grown at a rapid rate. We plan to dedicate rooms for specific purposes such as a band space for our fledgling music program, chapel for prayer, and state-of-the-art library equipped with computers. Our students will have additional resource centers and a senior lounge area.
As La Salle prepares to welcome in September its second wait-list freshman class—the largest in many years—it will do so with two new administrators. The Vice President for Academic Affairs and Principal, Kerry Conroy, will be flanked by two extraordinary educators: Matthew Stark, La Salle’s former English and Global Studies teacher for two years, has been named La Salle’s new Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs and Jerome Pannell, our Athletic Director, Varsity Basketball Coach and Campus Minister, has also been appointed Assistant Principal for Student Services.

La Salle is also excited to welcome new faculty members, including a Fine Arts Chairperson, Science Chairperson, Science Teacher, Religion Teacher, History Teacher, History/English Teacher and Assistant Campus Minister. These key hires will be instrumental in our efforts to be even more academically competitive with the top Catholic high schools in New York City.

While many Catholic schools face another year of decline, La Salle Academy has entered fiscal 2018 with one of the strongest starts in decades as we significantly increase our administrative staff, faculty, admissions and footprint. This major expansion portends our move back to 2nd Street in subsequent years. We are grateful for your support and ask that you stay with us on this journey back home. We cannot accomplish this key goal without your help.

Please keep us in your hearts and in prayer as we fulfill the mission of St. John Baptist de La Salle to educate the young, especially the poor, and secure the longevity of our beloved school. Our goal is to make sure that generations of Brothers’ Boys have the opportunity to walk the hallowed hallways of La Salle like many of you. Thank you.

St. John Baptist de La Salle….Pray for us.
Live Jesus in our hearts. Forever!

Catherine L. Guerriero, Ph.D., M.P.A.
President, La Salle Academy

Principal Kerry Conroy Receives the Bassen Service Award

After nearly two decades of service at La Salle Academy, Principal/Vice President Conroy has been awarded the Bassen Service Award.

Beginning as a Lasallian Volunteer and serving as the campus minister, tutor, and freshmen religion teacher, Ms. Conroy returned to La Salle shortly after her years of service to serve the Lasallian young men once again as a guidance counselor. Soon after that, Ms. Conroy was promoted to Director of Guidance and most recently served as La Salle’s Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs.

Conroy!

Rain Can’t Stop A Lasallian

Saturday, June 24, 2017 – La Salle Academy’s full-time Lasallian Volunteer, Mr. Matt Billings, did not let the rain stop him on Saturday, placing 9th overall and 1st in his age group in the NYC Pride Run. It was pouring rain in Central Park, but there were plenty of runners like Mr. Billings who were there to support Pride. Mr. Billings was even interviewed on NY1!

http://www.ny1.com/nyc/all-boroughs/news/2017/06/24/pride-run-2017-central-park.html

This year was Mr. Billings’ second and last year as a Lasallian Volunteer. He has set an example of excellence and perseverance for our students both years, something we all strive for at La Salle.

Students Attend Seminar at La Salle University

Saturday, June 10, 2017 – Eight rising juniors and seniors were invited to La Salle University’s Inaugural Summer Seminars. Some students participated in the Entrepreneurial Path to Success and others participated in The Power of Media. Students in the Entrepreneurial seminar ended the day-long session by presenting an innovative product or service to solve an educational issue. The students in The Power of Media ended with a public service announcement against cyber bullying. Both groups were taught by La Salle University professors. La Salle Academy was one of four participating Christian Brothers high schools.

This program is just a piece of La Salle Academy’s robust and growing partnership with La Salle University. We continue to find unique ways to cross our paths in ways that enhance both schools. We are grateful to be part of the Lasallian network.

Congratulations to all who participated in this program!

La Salle Welcomes the Class of 2021

La Salle welcomed 95 of the 106 students in the class of 2021 to La Salle Academy last night at the Freshmen Welcome Dinner. The incoming freshmen attended the dinner last night in the 6th Street gymnasium along with their families. Many incoming freshmen brought their younger siblings, future La Salle students.

After receiving their class schedules and other essential information, the rising freshmen and their families enjoyed a delicious meal together while learning about what to expect as a high school student at La Salle. They also learned about all the opportunities they will have, starting with our multiple summer programs for incoming freshmen. Excitement was definitely in the air as they learned about the road ahead.

106 freshmen will be attending La Salle in the fall, another record-breaking incoming class in the last few decades. For more photos from last night’s Freshmen Welcome Dinner, click here.

If you have any questions regarding admissions, please contact Anthony Chin at 212-475-8940 ext. 240.

In Memoriam: Louis Corso ’60

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Louis Corso from La Salle Academy’s class of 1960. Mr. Corso was an active member of the La Salle community for decades. Under the leadership of La Salle Board Trustee, Brother Carl Malacalza, FSC, Mr. Corso and his wife, Luba, helped launch La Salle’s first Spring Gala in 1991. Mr. Corso hosted this event for many years at his restaurant SPQR in Little Italy, helping to raise scholarship funds for La Salle’s young men.

“Louis Corso was a benefactor of La Salle Academy. Because of both Louis and Luba, I was able to get our development efforts started at LSA. Their example encouraged others to be as generous. They not only sponsored many students, but opened up their 600-seat restaurant for many fundraising occasions, covering all the costs. When they sold the restaurant, they opened up their home for similar events,” said Brother Carl, who was named La Salle Academy’s first President in 1993 after serving two years as Principal.

“Both Louis and Luba truly demonstrated the spirit of De La Salle in their commitment to our work and through their actions,” said Brother Carl.

Like a true Brothers’ Boy, Mr. Corso stayed faithful to his alma mater until his passing. He will always be remembered for his generous spirit and kind heart. He will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

The funeral arrangements are as follows:

Friday, June 9th: Wake will take place from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm at The Coster Heppner Funeral Home, 32470 Main Rd., Cutchogue, NY 11935, 631-734-7720.

Saturday, June 10th: Funeral Mass at 10:00 am at Our Lady of Ostrabrama; 3300 Depot Ln., Cutchogue, NY.

Please don’t hesitate to contact President Dr. Catherine Guerriero with any questions at 212-475-8940, ext. 238.

June 6, 2017 – La Salle Academy’s Class of 2017 exceeded expectations this year by achieving a nearly 100% graduation rate, 100% college acceptance rate, and to top it all off, the 74 students who make up La Salle’s senior class received approximately $15.2 million in scholarships and grants, which is over quadruple the amount of scholarship monies that were received in 2016.

Scholarship, Grant Monies More Than Quadruple to $15.2M from 2016

This fantastic feat comes on the heels of La Salle’s second waitlisted class in a row, the varsity basketball team’s first-ever New York State Federation B Division Championship title, and most recently, a CHSAA A Division City Championship title for the varsity baseball team. These extraordinary accomplishments are among many other outstanding triumphs happening at the East Village high school this year.

La Salle’s seniors graduated and celebrated their magnificent achievements on Thursday, June 1st at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. “Today, as you cross the proverbial threshold of high school graduation, yet again, St. John Baptist de La Salle, too, is victorious, as he manages again to ‘win’ the minds and hearts of young men for Christ and has helped them win the battle for excellence and success in life,” said Dr. Catherine Guerriero, President of La Salle Academy, as she addressed the graduates and their families.

This year celebrates 169 years of Catholic education in the Lasallian tradition in New York City.

Congratulations Class of 2017!

The La Salle Academy family welcomes 74 new alumni into the fold. La Salle congratulates the Class of 2017 on their many achievements including a nearly 100% graduation rate, a 100% college acceptance rate, and over $15 million in scholarship awards, more than quadruple the scholarships earned last year. What an astounding testament to their ability and work ethic!

Special recognition goes to the Class of 2017 valedictorian, Wilson Alexei, and salutatorian, Joshua Mediavilla.

Congratulations on your academic accomplishments!

The Class of 2017 graduated on Thursday, June 1st at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. The young men graduated in tuxedos, a more formal tradition brought back from decades ago.

As our most recent graduates will come to know, alumni are always part of our La Salle community. At graduation, we bestowed commemorative diplomas to the members of the Classes of ’67 and ’92 in attendance to celebrate graduation anniversaries.

Friday, June 2, 2017 – For the first time in over 10 years, the La Salle Academy Cardinals Varsity baseball team are Champions of the CHSAA (Catholic High School Athletic Association) Varsity “A” Division.  The Cardinals offense, with the aid of a couple errors, once again erupted taking a 5-1 lead after 2 innings, enroute to a 9-3 victory over the Nazareth Kingsmen to claim the title at St. John’s University.

Senior pitcher, Angel Fernandez-Diaz, pitched a complete game for the victory.  For the day, Angel, gave up 7 hits, striking out three and walking four, working out of jams in the third and fifth innings.  Angel also helped himself at the plate with an RBI single in three plate appearances.

Adrian Santos, had a monster game going 3 for 3 with a double, BB and RBI, to help lead the offense.  For the second time in as many games, the Cardinals jumped out on top and continued to pile on runs while Angel shut down Nazareth.  Playing with the lead, the outcome was never in doubt but an RBI triple by Franklin Padilla in the top of the seventh sealed the deal for the 2017 CHSAA Varsity “A” City Champions.

Congratulations to all of the players, coaches and parents for an outstanding season!

La Salle Baseball Forces Deciding Game for City Championship

Wednesday, May 31, 2017 – With their backs against the wall, the La Salle Cardinals baseball team came out with their claws sharp to force a deciding game by way of an 8-3 victory over Nazareth at Fordham University.  With the win, La Salle will get a shot to win our first Varsity Championship in over a decade.

Senior pitcher Danny Maria, making his last start for La Salle, was magnificent, throwing 6 2/3 innings giving up three earned runs with seven strikeouts and only one walk.  Cesar Santana picked up the final out on a strikeout as Nazareth tried to mount a two-out rally.

Senior Billy Gonzalez also had a big day going 2 for 4 with a triple and 2 RBIs.  Jimmy Muniz also contributed two hits and a run scored.  For the second time in as many days, the La Salle offense struck first as speedy Gilbert Santos, Jr. was able to squeeze past Nazareth’s pitcher, who was covering home on a wild pitch.  In the second the Cardinals batted around and put up 5 runs, to give them the comfort of the lead which they never gave back.

The Cardinals will face the Nazareth Kingsmen, one more time, for the CHSAA Varsity “A” Division Championship.  The game will take place on Friday, June 2nd at St. John’s University in Queens at 4:00pm.

CARDINALS STORM INTO CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND

Tuesday, May 30, 2017 – The La Salle Academy Cardinals varsity baseball team are headed to the CHSAA “A” Division Championship round thanks to stout pitching and an opportunistic offense that lead to a 10-0 five inning victory over St. John’s Prep at Salesian High School.

Junior Julian Nieves had a strong performance on the mound and at the plate to lead the Cardinals, tossing a complete game 3-hitter with three walks and three strikeouts.  Nieves helped himself at the plate going 2 for 3 with a run scored, two RBIs and four stolen bases. Gilbert Santos Jr. and Nicholas Brito contributed two hits and two RBIs apiece as the Cardinals stole 11 bases as a catalyst for the offense.

Defensively, La Salle played a relatively clean game as Nieves only allowed one runner to reach third base.

With the win, the Cardinals advance to CHSAA 2017 Varsity “A” Championship Tournament Championship Round.

La Salle, the #2 seed, will face the top seeded Nazareth Kingsmen, tomorrow, Wednesday, May 31st at Fordham University in the Bronx at 7pm.

This is a double elimination tournament. If La Salle wins, the deciding game will be on Friday (Time and Location: TBA).

Varsity Baseball Playoff Update

Saturday, May 27, 2017 – There is a playoff saying, “survive and move on,” and the La Salle Academy Cardinals did just that on Saturday with a 10-6 victory over the Sacred Heart Irish at Randall’s Island to move into the “Winners” bracket of the CHSAA 2017 Varsity “A” Championship Baseball Tournament. The win set up a Sunday showdown with the Nazareth Kingsman, 2pm at Msgr. McClancy High School, with the winner moving on into the Championship Round.

The score was tied 6-6 as the Cardinals and the Irish flip flopped 2 and 4 runs in the first two innings.

Angel Fernandez-Diaz pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Danny Maria to pick up the win. La Salle scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 6-6 tie as Gilbert Santos, Jr. and Nicholas Brito both walked and scored. Santos, Jr. would score on the back end of a double steal and Brito on a wild pitch. In the seventh following a walk to Adrian Santos, Billy Gonzalez (2 for 4) put the game out of reach with a mammoth home run to left that landed on the river basin of the park.

Sunday, May 28, 2017 – Twice down eight runs, the La Salle Cardinals rallied for five in the fourth and six in the sixth, but couldn’t push across the tying runs with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh and came up on the wrong end of their 11-13 loss to the Nazareth Kingsmen in the winners bracket game of the CHSAA Varsity “A” Championship Tournament at McClancy High School in Queens.

For the second straight day, the Cardinals fell behind early as Nazareth put up back to back four spots off La Salle’s starter John Michael Silvers, who took the loss after failing to get out of the second inning.  La Salle finally showed some life as they put up five runs in the top of the fourth thanks to a 2-RBI single by Adrian Santos. However, the Kingsmen struck right back for five runs to build their lead back to eight.

The varsity Cardinals will host St. John’s Prep in an CHSAA Elimination game on Tuesday. Time and location to be announced.

This event is La Salle’s final send-off for their Class of 2017 seniors, who will graduate on Thursday, June 1st from St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Midtown Manhattan.

LSA Varsity Baseball: Cardinals Drop a close one to divisional rival

Wednesday, May 17, 2017 – In a battle for division supremacy, the La Salle Cardinals fell short 7-5 against Monsignor Scanlan in the Bronx.  The loss dropped the Cards to 9-4 in league play and creates a 3-way logjam on the top of the division with Scanlan and Nazareth.  However, La Salle holds the tiebreaker (head-to-head) over Scanlan but Nazareth has the tiebreaker over La Salle.

La Salle broke on the board for four runs in the top of the second only to give up five runs to Scanlan in the bottom of the frame.  LSA pitcher, Angel Fernandez-Diaz (L) scored the tying run in the top of the third but the Cardinals failed to capitalize the rest of the inning leaving the bases loaded without pushing across any extra runs to support.   Scanlan grabbed the lead for good in the fifth on an errant throw to third on a stolen base, which ended up in left field. They tacked on an insurance run in the sixth for the final margin of victory.

On offense, Jervon Warlick had two hits and Julian Nieves had one-hit and two RBIs to pace the cards.

Carlos Flores was superb, tossing the five-inning complete game on 82 pitches, striking out seven while giving up only two hits.

La Salle JV got on the board in the bottom of the first posting two on and RBI single by Roberto Liz and an error on Scanlan’s left fielder.   The final margin of victory came in the bottom of the fifth as La Salle sent up eight batters, plating five runs without the benefit of a hit and scoring the Championship Winning run on a long fly ball to center field of the bat of Angel Espinal, that scored Kirean Garlick from third and sending the Home crowd into a joyous celebration.

La Salle Varsity Picks Off Nazareth

Monday, May 1, 2017 – It wasn’t the prettiest game in the world with a combined nine

errors but it may have been the 7-5 victory over Nazareth at American Legion Fields may have just been the win La Salle needed as they begin the back half of the season. Danny Maria (W, 3-0) went six and two-thirds innings, striking out six and walking three as Cesar Santana closed it out to pick up his third save of the season. Adrian Santos went 2 for 3, 2B, RBI; Billy Gonzalez went 2 for 4, 2B, RBI; and Franddy Rodriguez added 2 RBIs as the Cardinals scratched their way to seven runs on seven hits but couldn’t land the knockout blow by stranding 12 men on base.

Nazareth jumped out to an early 3-1 lead thanks in part to three La Salle errors in the first two innings but the Cardinal offense found a way to post two in the top of the third to tie it then two more in the top of the fourth to move go ahead for good.  The defending CHSAA “A” Division champs made a late rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run and threatening with two outs and the tying run on first base but the Nazareth center fielder got caught stealing third after he left too early and got picked off by Santana to end the game.

The win improves La Salle’s record to 7-3 overall and 7-1 in the CHSAA “A” Division.

After a slow start the La Salle offense erupted for five runs in the top of the third on four hits and a bases loaded walk.  Two more runs in the top of the fourth courtesy of three straight singles by Jervon Warlick, Nieves and Adrian Santos.  The final margin of victory was provided in the top of the fifth on a two-run fielding error, double by Nicholas Brito and the Nieves’ triple.

The Cardinals’ defense was solid with no errors and completing a 1-3-6 caught stealing to end the third inning and aptly enough ended the game on a perfect 9-4-2 relay to home plate to preserve the shutout and the win.

La Salle Baseball Soars to 14-1 Victory at Msgr. Scanlan

Wednesday, April 26, 2017 – The La Salle Academy varsity baseball team used a balanced attack, crafty pitching and solid defense to soar past Monsignor Scanlan 14-1 in five innings at Scanlan Field.  Julian Nieves pitched a complete game 2-hitter with five strikeouts. La Salle Rallies Late for Victory over Sacred Heart

Monday, April 17, 2017 –  What began as a pitchers duel early broke open late and the La Salle Cardinals used a little small ball for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to pick up the 8-4 victory over Sacred Heart at Welty Park in Yonkers.  La Salle improved its record to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the CHSAA ‘A’ with two more league games on tap this week.

La Salle starting pitcher, John Michael Silvers (ND, 4R, 3ER, 8K, 4BB) locked horns with the Irish’ E Paulino to start the game and left the game after 89 pitches and on the short end of the stick.  However, Jervon Warlick (W, 1-0) came in eventually picked up the win going three innings giving up 1 hit while striking out seven.

Click here to see John Silvers throw a strikeout pitch!

Julian Nieves led the Cardinal bats with 2 hits and an RBI. The decisive rally, in the top of the seventh, got started with Angel Fernandez-Diaz’ booming double to right center and was followed by a Jayson Polanco bunt, a walk, a fielder’s choice, safety squeeze, and a little league home run.  That combination of small ball and heart was exactly what was needed as Jervon shut the door 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame.

NEXT UP

The Cardinals host Cathedral Prep on Wednesday at East River Park #6.  First pitch is 1pm.

JV Cardinals Fall against Packer Pelicans

Wednesday, April 12, 2017 – On a day right for baseball the La Salle Academy JV Cardinals (1-3 Overall; 1-0 League) did all the wrong things including making 12 errors in a lopsided 5-15 lost to non-league Packer Collegiate at American Legion Fields in Brooklyn, NY.

A day after their hard-fought win against league rival Nazareth, the Cardinals were low energy despite going up 2-0 after one inning.  But that turned out to be an omen because even then a base running miscue cost La Salle a potential big inning.  Overall, missed fly balls, botched grounds and poor communication, led to the 12 errors also ruined solid pitching performances from Cristobal Rivera and Tristen Frederick.

Roberto Liz continued his hot start to the season going 2 for 3, 3 RBIs but it wasn’t enough as the offense managed just one hit the rest of the way.

NEXT GAME

Cardinals Fall to Nazareth Late

Thursday, April 13, 2017 – It was the first meeting of the two teams since last year’s playoffs but the outcome was the same as the La Salle Varsity Cardinals lost 5-3 to the defending champions, the Nazareth Kingsmen during a noon showdown at East River Park.

Nicholas Brito took the loss in relief as the Cards fell to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the CHSAA ‘A’ Division. Junior Julian Nieves pitched well going 6 innings giving up 3 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits while striking out 8 but ultimately La Salle was done in by the six defensive errors.

After grabbing the early lead and then falling behind, Nazareth tied the game in the top of the sixth then scored the winning runs via two bases loaded walks in the top of the seventh.

Julian Nieves and Gilbert Santos, Jr lead the offense with two hits and an RBI apiece. Gilbert also made the defensive play of the game robbing Nazareth off a couple extra runs when he chased down a deep opposite field drive to end the top of the sixth.

NEXT UP: The Varsity Cardinals travel to Yonkers to take on the Irish of Sacred Heart on Monday, April 17th at 3pm in Welty Park.

JV Cardinals Score Late for Victory over Nazareth

Tuesday, April 11, 2017 – In their first meeting since last year’s CHSAA A Division JV Championship game, the La Salle JV Cardinals (1-2 Overall; 1-0 League) scored an 8-6 victory over Nazareth in their first league game of the year at American Legion Field in Brooklyn, NY.

After jumping to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, La Salle let Nazareth right back in giving up three in the bottom of the frame on errors.  The rest of the game was a terse affair with late lead changes, heads up base running, clutch hits, a late inning rally and shut down relief performance for the win.

Tristen Frederick picked up the win in relief of starter Carlos Flores who reached the new max-pitch count limit. Roberto Liz went 1 for 2 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored to lead the team at the plate but for his shutdown performance in the bottom of the sixth while also going 1 for 4 with a triple.

The JV Cardinals play again today, April 12th vs Packer Collegiate Institute at American Legion, first pitch is slated for 4:30pm.

innings of two hit ball, while striking out 10. Cesar Santana picked up the save as the La Salle Cardinals (1-2 Overall, 1-0 League) scored a 6-2 Division victory over Monsignor Scanlan in over five years at our first home game at East River Park.

As expected, the CHSAA “A” league opener on Field #6 drew a huge crowd on a gorgeous day, and they were not disappointed. The home team scored three in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second for an early 5-0 lead. Julian Nieves and Adrian Santos each went 2 for 3 to power the offense as eight Cardinals collected hits.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NYC MAYORAL CANDIDATE MASSEY TOURS LA SALLE ACADEMY

East Village, N.Y., April 4, 2017 – On Tuesday, Mayoral Candidate Paul Massey toured La Salle Academy, one of the oldest all-boys Catholic high schools in Manhattan.

Massey met with students, faculty, and staff of La Salle and spoke with them about everything from the school’s most recent State Championship to some of the students’ favorite extra-curricular activities, including the Cooper Union STEAM partnership and the newly revived band.

“I decided to run for mayor because of students like you,” Massey said, addressing four La Salle students. He explained, “This is the greatest city in the world, and it has been so welcoming to me that I want to ensure everyone else has the ability to receive the same opportunities, the same choice of education, and the same chance for success that I had the good fortune to receive.”

Massey, who announced his run for Mayor in 2016, has focused his policies on developing solutions to some of New York’s most pressing issues, including the opportunity for New Yorkers to choose a quality education aimed toward future success throughout the five boroughs.

Celebrating 169 years of Catholic education in the Lasallian tradition, La Salle Academy is flourishing in the Lower East Side. For more information about La Salle, please contact Ismini Scouras at 212-475-8940, ext. 204, email [email protected], or visit www.lasalleacademy.org.

For Cardinals, Moore is Too Much

Sunday, April 2, 2017 – In a match-up against a “AA,” the La Salle Academy Cardinals dropped both games of their Varsity/JV double header 3-8 and 0-6, respectively to Moore Catholic at the Richmond County Youth Complex on Staten Island.

It was the first game in over two weeks for all four teams due to the bad weather, but the LSA Varsity showed no signs of rust. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but that was all they could muster as Moore scored eight unanswered for the win. Julien Nieves pitched well but took the loss giving up five runs in four innings with 5Ks and 4 walks.

The Junior Varsity Cardinals never really got on track and were no-hit by a combination of Moore Catholic pitchers. Carlos Flores took the loss scattering four hits over four innings and giving up three earned runs.  The young Cardinals struggled to produce hits and runs which ultimately led to the loss.

La Salle Varsity and JV baseball teams have the week off and begin CHSAA “A” league play the week of April 10th.

La Salle Drops Opening Day Doubleheader

Thursday, March 23, 2017 – La Salle Academy varsity and junior varsity Cardinals suffered losses on their opening-day games 6-0 on Varsity and 11-2 to non-conference, cross-town rival Xavier on a cold and blustery day at American Legion Field in Brooklyn.

Final scores notwithstanding, both games were close.  Varsity was down 0-1 going into the top of the seventh but Xavier struck for five to put the game away.  JV was tied 1-1 until the 3rd thanks to an RBI single by Angel Espinal but in the fourth errors and miscues lead to seven Xavier JV runs.

The next game will be played at American Legion Field on Thursday, March 30th at 4pm against Cardinal Hayes.

LA SALLE ADVANCES TO FEDERATION CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

East Village, N.Y., March 24, 2017 – In a thrilling matchup between two New York City teams, La Salle Academy varsity basketball defeated Fannie Lou Hamer High School 61-47 to advance to the Federation Tournament Final. With today’s win, the Cardinals will face Westhill High School in the Championship Game at 5pm on Saturday, March 25th at the Glens Falls Civic Center. This game will also be broadcast live on Spectrum Sports.

A game that began with a 19-5 La Salle run, the Cardinals would extend the lead to 11 points entering the 4th quarter behind the play of Isaiah Allen-Smith and James Bouknight. The Cardinals would solidify the win with strong defense and great teamwork down the stretch. Isaiah Allen-Smith led the way with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while James Bouknight added 12 points and Justin Rivera added 10 points. Senior and varsity team captain, Bryce Council, controlled the tempo with 8 points and 9 assists.

“What an incredible season and four years this has been,” Council exclaimed. “We have been counted out and overlooked…but we have been working towards these goals for years. The last two years we fell short, so this year our mindset was to be mindful of that feeling we had after those losses and use that as a part of our fuel to drive us. We are focused, we are on the same page, we play for each other, we want to win and ‘We Are La Salle!’”

“This team has been a true pleasure to coach and the focus of the team is to be the very best we can on and off the court, something we have achieved thus far,” said Head Coach Jerome Pannell. “It is, quite honestly, a true honor to be able to be a part of the resurgence of La Salle, not only the basketball program but the institution as a whole. La Salle Basketball has a rich tradition and this team, especially these seniors, are a true example of resilience, perseverance and the work ethic that is a pillar of being true Lasallians.”

The championship titles earned this season have come at an excellent time for La Salle Academy, as the school is being resurrected as a top-notch New York City Lasallian Catholic school, officially hitting wait-list admissions for the second year in a row after a 29-year drought.

La Salle now has nine total City Championship titles (1943, 1946, 1954, 1962, 1967, 1971, 1997, 2004, and 2017) and one State Catholic Championship title (1997). La Salle’s last appearance in the Federation Tournament of Champions was in 1997.

La Salle Marches in the NYC Saint Patrick’s Day Parade!

La Salle Academy marched 300 strong – 100 more than last year – in New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the oldest and largest parade of its kind in the United States. Over 220 of our student body, 25 staff and faculty, and over 50 alumni and family marched along 5th Avenue on Friday as the sun came out and La Salle came back with the vengeance.  The group was led – for the first time in over 30 years – by our La Salle Band as they played the La Salle Fight Song and other marching tunes. It was glorious!

Thank to Principal Kerry Conroy for “drafting” more boys to march this year than since we began marching again in 2015 or 2016 combined. Additional special thanks go to Band Leader Joe Alfano who worked magic with a small, yet strikingly game and talented band that broke through the vacuum with a flair. And finally, thank you to the alumni and trustees who joined us at Marty Cottingham’s office for a huge brunch.

Snow Day: Tuesday, March 14, 2017

Due to the forecast of inclement weather, La Salle Academy will be closed on Tuesday, March 14, 2017. There will be no school and offices will be closed. Stay safe and warm. Happy snow day!

Throughout, the Cardinals would force a total of 28 turnovers which dictated the pace and tempo of the game.

Cardinal Soccer Trains With The New York Red Bulls

Bouna Coundoul, a former New York Red Bulls player and current trainer for the professional team, ran a two-hour clinic on Friday afternoon for twenty-five La Salle young men, most of whom are part of La Salle’s soccer team. The clinic was held in the school gym on 6th Street. Joined by La Salle Coach Pally, these young men worked tirelessly the entire clinic, running drills and practicing their penalty shots. Fifteen minutes into the session, the student athletes were already asking when the NY Red Bulls would be back. The students were able to learn about what it takes to make it to the professional level. Coundoul answered questions and signed autographs for the young men at the end of the session. The day was a great success. La Salle Academy would like to thank the New York Red Bulls for this special event.
