In Memoriam: Mr. George E. Scharpf ’58
It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of George E. Scharpf from La Salle Academy’s class of 1958. Mr. Scharpf has been generously giving his time, treasure and talent to his alma mater for many decades, never refusing an opportunity to better the lives of the Brothers’ Boys following in his footsteps.
A lifelong lover of music, Mr. Scharpf contributed to the third-floor expansion at our beloved school (at 6th Street) by establishing The Scharpf Family Music Center at La Salle Academy in 2018. This provided a home for our revitalized band and music program to flourish in years to come, something close to Mr. Scharpf’s heart.
In 2000, Mr. Scharpf and his sister, Marguerite, established a scholarship at La Salle in memory of their brother, Ernest, a graduate from La Salle’s class of 1959. The Ernest J. Scharpf Scholarship has contributed thousands of dollars to La Salle Academy students in need over the past 18 years.
In the late 2000s, Mr. Scharpf served as a member of La Salle Academy’s Board of Trustees and again as one of our devout consultants until his passing on January 4, 2019. Mr. Scharpf played a role in some of the most formative years of La Salle’s recent history and our community will be forever grateful for his kindness and support.
Following his graduation from La Salle Academy in 1958, Mr. Scharpf went on to graduate from the University of Notre Dame in 1962 and received his MBA from New York University in 1969. After receiving his MBA, Mr. Scharpf began his career at Amboy Bank in Old Bridge, NJ. Mr. Scharpf led the bank as Chairman, President and CEO right up until his death. This job allowed him to work alongside his family – his sons, Gregory and Eric, and his brother-in-law, Joseph – and his community.
A private memorial will be held. For condolences, please visit https://tributes.com/georgescharpf. In lieu of flowers, the Scharpf family requests donations to La Salle Academy (www.lasalleacademy.org, 44 East 2nd Street, New York, NY 10003).
