La Salle Soccer Pushes Through with Playoff Win
La Salle Academy survived a tough match against a young St. Raymond and in the end, turned a 1-1 halftime tie, into a 3-1 victory in the quarter-final round of the CHSAA B Division Varsity Soccer 2020 Championship. With the win, the Cardinals secured a Semi-Final date with the #1 seed Cristo Rey, on Wednesday, November 11th at 4:00 pm.
La Salle got off to a slow start, but was able to take the lead at the 20-minute mark of the first half as Veton D. ’23, buried his 10th goal of the season from the right off the box after a long cross pitch feed from his brother, Valon D. ’21, from inside the center circle. However, at the 35-minute mark, St. Ray’s Ravens knotted the score going into intermission.
The start of the 2nd half saw a re-energized Cardinal team, flying all over the pitch. Their hard work resulted in a pushing foul against the Ravens. Aaron P. ’22 buried the ensuing direct kick for the 2-1 lead. Veton D. ’23 added his 11th goal of the season five minutes later to cap the scoring, Nayden V. ’21 (5 saves) got the win as the La Salle Cardinals play in the Semi-Finals for the first time in six years.
The La Salle Academy Cardinals will take on Cristo Rey Brooklyn this Wednesday, November 11th at 4:00 pm.
