La Salle Academy’s May Recap
For most of our students Elvis Presley is likely to be an unknown name. However, Rowan, a junior from Jersey, went back more than six decades to perform Heartbreak Hotel as if he was the King of Rock and Roll himself. It was one of the acts in our recent Talent Show that featured poetry recitations, instrumental solos and duets, singing, and ballroom dancing. What a great school wide assembly it was as we acknowledged this dimension of academic excellence at La Salle during Founder’s Week.
The five days devoted to honoring Saint John Baptist de La Salle were initiated on his traditional feast day, 15 May. Each day of the week focused on one of the five core principles of Lasallian education: inclusive community, quality education, respect for all people, faith in the presence of God, and concern for the poor and social justice. We celebrated proudly and well!
“La Salle’s Got Talent!” Students and faculty performed songs, dances, and recited poetry kicking off Founder’s Week celebrations from May 15-19.
Seniors enjoyed their Prom before walking down the aisle at St. Patrick’s Cathedral for their Graduation in June.
During Founder’s Week, our entire school community gathered for Ascension Thursday Mass. In the presence of the assembly, I joined my confreres who serve our students (Brothers Richard Galvin, William Johnson, and John McManus) as we renewed our vows.
We celebrated the Class of 2027 Freshmen Welcome Dinner! Incoming students and their family members joined us for a festive evening. Almost all the young men who have enrolled thus far were present. I was happy to meet our mascot, Johnny Cardinal, before I left office!
We observed Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month with students and faculty gathered to share their cultural stories, clothing, food, and traditions.
Brooklyn Borough President, Antonio Reynoso ’01, was a guest lecturer at one of our Leadership classes sharing his story, allowing students to envision themselves as future leaders in the community.
Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s Scholarship Benefit a sold-out SUCCESS! Donors contributed more than $70,000 at the event! With thanks to our benefactors, we surpassed our goal and raised over $450,000 for tuition assistance
We have over 70 registered golfers to date for our upcoming June 2023 Cardinal Classic. There are limited spots left to join us for a fun day on the golf course! If you can’t golf with us this day, you can make a gift or secure a sponsorship here! We’d like a strong finish to our fiscal year which ends June 30th.
Around Athletics
We celebrated our first La Salle Athletic Awards Ceremony since 2019. Student-athletes accepted individual and team awards for their respective sports. Parents, coaches, faculty, and staff enjoyed this wonderful evening.
Congratulations to our Track head coach, William Hackshaw (pictured back row, second to the left) on being inducted to the New York Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) Hall of Fame!
I am grateful for the kind words, helpful counsel, generous donations, and powerful prayers that friends of La Salle have contributed during my four-year term as the school’s President. I am honored to have played a part in the 175-year history of La Salle Academy.
