Friday, June 2, 2017 – For the first time in over 10 years, the La Salle Academy Cardinals Varsity baseball team are Champions of the CHSAA (Catholic High School Athletic Association) Varsity “A” Division.  The Cardinals offense, with the aid of a couple errors, once again erupted taking a 5-1 lead after 2 innings, enroute to a 9-3 victory over the Nazareth Kingsmen to claim the title at St. John’s University.

Senior pitcher, Angel Fernandez-Diaz, pitched a complete game for the victory.  For the day, Angel, gave up 7 hits, striking out three and walking four, working out of jams in the third and fifth innings.  Angel also helped himself at the plate with an RBI single in three plate appearances.

Adrian Santos, had a monster game going 3 for 3 with a double, BB and RBI, to help lead the offense.  For the second time in as many games, the Cardinals jumped out on top and continued to pile on runs while Angel shut down Nazareth.  Playing with the lead, the outcome was never in doubt but an RBI triple by Franklin Padilla in the top of the seventh sealed the deal for the 2017 CHSAA Varsity “A” City Champions.

Congratulations to all of the players, coaches and parents for an outstanding season!

La Salle Baseball Forces Deciding Game for City Championship

Wednesday, May 31, 2017 – With their backs against the wall, the La Salle Cardinals baseball team came out with their claws sharp to force a deciding game by way of an 8-3 victory over Nazareth at Fordham University.  With the win, La Salle will get a shot to win our first Varsity Championship in over a decade.

Senior pitcher Danny Maria, making his last start for La Salle, was magnificent, throwing 6 2/3 innings giving up three earned runs with seven strikeouts and only one walk.  Cesar Santana picked up the final out on a strikeout as Nazareth tried to mount a two-out rally.

Senior Billy Gonzalez also had a big day going 2 for 4 with a triple and 2 RBIs.  Jimmy Muniz also contributed two hits and a run scored.  For the second time in as many days, the La Salle offense struck first as speedy Gilbert Santos, Jr. was able to squeeze past Nazareth’s pitcher, who was covering home on a wild pitch.  In the second the Cardinals batted around and put up 5 runs, to give them the comfort of the lead which they never gave back.

The Cardinals will face the Nazareth Kingsmen, one more time, for the CHSAA Varsity “A” Division Championship.  The game will take place on Friday, June 2nd at St. John’s University in Queens at 4:00pm.

CARDINALS STORM INTO CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND

Tuesday, May 30, 2017 – The La Salle Academy Cardinals varsity baseball team are headed to the CHSAA “A” Division Championship round thanks to stout pitching and an opportunistic offense that lead to a 10-0 five inning victory over St. John’s Prep at Salesian High School.

Junior Julian Nieves had a strong performance on the mound and at the plate to lead the Cardinals, tossing a complete game 3-hitter with three walks and three strikeouts.  Nieves helped himself at the plate going 2 for 3 with a run scored, two RBIs and four stolen bases. Gilbert Santos Jr. and Nicholas Brito contributed two hits and two RBIs apiece as the Cardinals stole 11 bases as a catalyst for the offense.

Defensively, La Salle played a relatively clean game as Nieves only allowed one runner to reach third base.

With the win, the Cardinals advance to CHSAA 2017 Varsity “A” Championship Tournament Championship Round.

La Salle, the #2 seed, will face the top seeded Nazareth Kingsmen, tomorrow, Wednesday, May 31st at Fordham University in the Bronx at 7pm.

This is a double elimination tournament. If La Salle wins, the deciding game will be on Friday (Time and Location: TBA).

Varsity Baseball Playoff Update

Saturday, May 27, 2017 – There is a playoff saying, “survive and move on,” and the La Salle Academy Cardinals did just that on Saturday with a 10-6 victory over the Sacred Heart Irish at Randall’s Island to move into the “Winners” bracket of the CHSAA 2017 Varsity “A” Championship Baseball Tournament. The win set up a Sunday showdown with the Nazareth Kingsman, 2pm at Msgr. McClancy High School, with the winner moving on into the Championship Round.

The score was tied 6-6 as the Cardinals and the Irish flip flopped 2 and 4 runs in the first two innings.

Angel Fernandez-Diaz pitched three scoreless innings in relief of Danny Maria to pick up the win. La Salle scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth to break a 6-6 tie as Gilbert Santos, Jr. and Nicholas Brito both walked and scored. Santos, Jr. would score on the back end of a double steal and Brito on a wild pitch. In the seventh following a walk to Adrian Santos, Billy Gonzalez (2 for 4) put the game out of reach with a mammoth home run to left that landed on the river basin of the park.

Sunday, May 28, 2017 – Twice down eight runs, the La Salle Cardinals rallied for five in the fourth and six in the sixth, but couldn’t push across the tying runs with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh and came up on the wrong end of their 11-13 loss to the Nazareth Kingsmen in the winners bracket game of the CHSAA Varsity “A” Championship Tournament at McClancy High School in Queens.

For the second straight day, the Cardinals fell behind early as Nazareth put up back to back four spots off La Salle’s starter John Michael Silvers, who took the loss after failing to get out of the second inning.  La Salle finally showed some life as they put up five runs in the top of the fourth thanks to a 2-RBI single by Adrian Santos. However, the Kingsmen struck right back for five runs to build their lead back to eight.

The varsity Cardinals will host St. John’s Prep in an CHSAA Elimination game on Tuesday. Time and location to be announced.

LSA Varsity Baseball: Cardinals Drop a close one to divisional rival

Wednesday, May 17, 2017 – In a battle for division supremacy, the La Salle Cardinals fell short 7-5 against Monsignor Scanlan in the Bronx.  The loss dropped the Cards to 9-4 in league play and creates a 3-way logjam on the top of the division with Scanlan and Nazareth.  However, La Salle holds the tiebreaker (head-to-head) over Scanlan but Nazareth has the tiebreaker over La Salle.

La Salle broke on the board for four runs in the top of the second only to give up five runs to Scanlan in the bottom of the frame.  LSA pitcher, Angel Fernandez-Diaz (L) scored the tying run in the top of the third but the Cardinals failed to capitalize the rest of the inning leaving the bases loaded without pushing across any extra runs to support.   Scanlan grabbed the lead for good in the fifth on an errant throw to third on a stolen base, which ended up in left field. They tacked on an insurance run in the sixth for the final margin of victory.

On offense, Jervon Warlick had two hits and Julian Nieves had one-hit and two RBIs to pace the cards.

NEXT GAME

La Salle Varsity Picks Off Nazareth

Monday, May 1, 2017 – It wasn’t the prettiest game in the world with a combined nine

errors but it may have been the 7-5 victory over Nazareth at American Legion Fields may have just been the win La Salle needed as they begin the back half of the season. Danny Maria (W, 3-0) went six and two-thirds innings, striking out six and walking three as Cesar Santana closed it out to pick up his third save of the season. Adrian Santos went 2 for 3, 2B, RBI; Billy Gonzalez went 2 for 4, 2B, RBI; and Franddy Rodriguez added 2 RBIs as the Cardinals scratched their way to seven runs on seven hits but couldn’t land the knockout blow by stranding 12 men on base.

Nazareth jumped out to an early 3-1 lead thanks in part to three La Salle errors in the first two innings but the Cardinal offense found a way to post two in the top of the third to tie it then two more in the top of the fourth to move go ahead for good.  The defending CHSAA “A” Division champs made a late rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring one run and threatening with two outs and the tying run on first base but the Nazareth center fielder got caught stealing third after he left too early and got picked off by Santana to end the game.

The win improves La Salle’s record to 7-3 overall and 7-1 in the CHSAA “A” Division.

NEXT GAME

Monday, April 24, 2017 – John Michael Silvers went the distance for the win on five hits, three walks and four strikeouts, while Julian Nieves went 3 for 4 with a triple and three RBIs as the La Salle Academy varsity baseball team racked up 11 hits enroot to an 11-0 five inning victory against Bishop Loughlin at American Legion Fields in Brooklyn.  The win raises the Cardinals records to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the CHSAA ‘A’ Division.

After a slow start the La Salle offense erupted for five runs in the top of the third on four hits and a bases loaded walk.  Two more runs in the top of the fourth courtesy of three straight singles by Jervon Warlick, Nieves and Adrian Santos.  The final margin of victory was provided in the top of the fifth on a two-run fielding error, double by Nicholas Brito and the Nieves’ triple.

The Cardinals’ defense was solid with no errors and completing a 1-3-6 caught stealing to end the third inning and aptly enough ended the game on a perfect 9-4-2 relay to home plate to preserve the shutout and the win.

La Salle Baseball Soars to 14-1 Victory at Msgr. Scanlan

Wednesday, April 26, 2017 – The La Salle Academy varsity baseball team used a balanced attack, crafty pitching and solid defense to soar past Monsignor Scanlan 14-1 in five innings at Scanlan Field.  Julian Nieves pitched a complete game 2-hitter with five strikeouts. Franddy Rodriguez (3 RBIs) & Adrian Santos (4 RBIs) each went 2 for 3 to help raise the Cardinals’ record to 6-3 overall and 6-1 in the CHSAA “A” division.

La Salle batted around the order in the second inning and twice rolled up six runs in the second and fifth innings, the latter of which sealed the game and was keyed by a base clearing 3-run double to left center by Adrian Santos and an opposite field ground-rule double by catcher Billy Gonzalez.

Scanlan scratched across a run in the bottom of the third but that was it as Julian Nieves (2H, 1R, 1ER, 4BB, 5K) worked thru his mechanics to squelch any additional runs from crossing the plate.

NEXT GAME

Varsity Baseball Defeats St. John’s Prep 3-1

La Salle jumped out to the early lead in the bottom of the first as Nicholas Brito pounded a double to gap in right center and would score later. St. John’s Prep, however, tied the game in the top of the third on a sac fly to center.

However, La Salle (4-3 overall; 4-1division) responded to SJP’s run in the third with a run of their own as Danny Maria (1 for 2) came around to score on a Nicholas Brito ground out to third, to reclaim the lead.  Cesar Santana came on in relief of Jervon Warlick in the top of the sixth with a man on and for the second straight outing, escaped without the run coming across, then closed out with a 1-2-3 seventh inning.

It was the best game of the year so far for the JV as eight different Cardinals scored on 10 hits. Scanlan was still in the game down 3 runs but their 4th inning rally was thwarted on bad baserunning and a heads up double play by the Cardinals defense to support Olivares 8 strikeouts.

The Cardinals jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first on a booming first pitch double to left center by Angel Fernandez-Diaz that scored Julian Nieves (1 for 2, R, K, BB) who was on with a walk and running on the pitch.  However, the hitting star of today’s game was right fielder, Christian Cueto, who went 2 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI.

Maria was stellar picking up his second win of the season while his ERA dropped to 1.50, his final line for the game 7 IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 4K, 0BB.

La Salle JV Baseball Erupts for 20 Hits in Win

Tuesday, April 18, 2017 – The 20-hits was easily the JV Cardinals highest output in two years using them to fuel the 19-7 victory. Nicholas Rivera, just installed as the lead-off hitter, responded going 4 for 6 with 3R and an RBI, while also pitching two innings of scoreless relief.  Carlos Flores went the first four innings and gets credited for the win and Cristobal Rivera also chipped in with an inning of relief work to accompany his two hits and two RBIs.

However, this game was all about the bats as Omar Salcedo went 3 for 6, Franklin Olivares 3 for 5, 5 RBI’s; Angel Espinal 3 for 6, with two RBI’s including an opposite field ground rule double blast that clear the 80-foot fence in right field.  Sean Coles had three hits and two RBI’s.

La Salle Rallies Late for Victory over Sacred Heart

Monday, April 17, 2017 –  What began as a pitchers duel early broke open late and the La Salle Cardinals used a little small ball for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to pick up the 8-4 victory over Sacred Heart at Welty Park in Yonkers.  La Salle improved its record to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in the CHSAA ‘A’ with two more league games on tap this week.

La Salle starting pitcher, John Michael Silvers (ND, 4R, 3ER, 8K, 4BB) locked horns with the Irish’ E Paulino to start the game and left the game after 89 pitches and on the short end of the stick.  However, Jervon Warlick (W, 1-0) came in eventually picked up the win going three innings giving up 1 hit while striking out seven.

Click here to see John Silvers throw a strikeout pitch!

Julian Nieves led the Cardinal bats with 2 hits and an RBI. The decisive rally, in the top of the seventh, got started with Angel Fernandez-Diaz’ booming double to right center and was followed by a Jayson Polanco bunt, a walk, a fielder’s choice, safety squeeze, and a little league home run.  That combination of small ball and heart was exactly what was needed as Jervon shut the door 1-2-3 in the bottom of the frame.

NEXT UP

The Cardinals host Cathedral Prep on Wednesday at East River Park #6.  First pitch is 1pm.

JV Cardinals Fall against Packer Pelicans

Wednesday, April 12, 2017 – On a day right for baseball the La Salle Academy JV Cardinals (1-3 Overall; 1-0 League) did all the wrong things including making 12 errors in a lopsided 5-15 lost to non-league Packer Collegiate at American Legion Fields in Brooklyn, NY.

A day after their hard-fought win against league rival Nazareth, the Cardinals were low energy despite going up 2-0 after one inning.  But that turned out to be an omen because even then a base running miscue cost La Salle a potential big inning.  Overall, missed fly balls, botched grounds and poor communication, led to the 12 errors also ruined solid pitching performances from Cristobal Rivera and Tristen Frederick.

Roberto Liz continued his hot start to the season going 2 for 3, 3 RBIs but it wasn’t enough as the offense managed just one hit the rest of the way.

NEXT GAME

The JV Cardinals are back in action next Tuesday, April 18 for a league game at Monsignor Scanlan (915 Hutchinson River Parkway, Bronx) at  4:30pm.

Cardinals Fall to Nazareth Late

Thursday, April 13, 2017 – It was the first meeting of the two teams since last year’s playoffs but the outcome was the same as the La Salle Varsity Cardinals lost 5-3 to the defending champions, the Nazareth Kingsmen during a noon showdown at East River Park.

Nicholas Brito took the loss in relief as the Cards fell to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the CHSAA ‘A’ Division. Junior Julian Nieves pitched well going 6 innings giving up 3 runs (1 earned) on 5 hits while striking out 8 but ultimately La Salle was done in by the six defensive errors.

After grabbing the early lead and then falling behind, Nazareth tied the game in the top of the sixth then scored the winning runs via two bases loaded walks in the top of the seventh.

Julian Nieves and Gilbert Santos, Jr lead the offense with two hits and an RBI apiece. Gilbert also made the defensive play of the game robbing Nazareth off a couple extra runs when he chased down a deep opposite field drive to end the top of the sixth.

NEXT UP: The Varsity Cardinals travel to Yonkers to take on the Irish of Sacred Heart on Monday, April 17th at 3pm in Welty Park.

Cardinals Notch First Win of the Season

As expected, the CHSAA “A” league opener on Field #6 drew a huge crowd on a gorgeous day, and they were not disappointed. The home team scored three in the bottom of the first and two more in the bottom of the second for an early 5-0 lead. Julian Nieves and Adrian Santos each went 2 for 3 to power the offense as eight Cardinals collected hits.

The Cardinals are back in action on Thursday, April 13th against Nazareth back at East River Park Field #6, first pitch is Noon.

For Cardinals, Moore is Too Much

Sunday, April 2, 2017 – In a match-up against a “AA,” the La Salle Academy Cardinals dropped both games of their Varsity/JV double header 3-8 and 0-6, respectively to Moore Catholic at the Richmond County Youth Complex on Staten Island.

It was the first game in over two weeks for all four teams due to the bad weather, but the LSA Varsity showed no signs of rust. They jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, but that was all they could muster as Moore scored eight unanswered for the win. Julien Nieves pitched well but took the loss giving up five runs in four innings with 5Ks and 4 walks.

The Junior Varsity Cardinals never really got on track and were no-hit by a combination of Moore Catholic pitchers. Carlos Flores took the loss scattering four hits over four innings and giving up three earned runs.  The young Cardinals struggled to produce hits and runs which ultimately led to the loss.

La Salle Varsity and JV baseball teams have the week off and begin CHSAA “A” league play the week of April 10th.

La Salle Drops Opening Day Doubleheader

Thursday, March 23, 2017 – La Salle Academy varsity and junior varsity Cardinals suffered losses on their opening-day games 6-0 on Varsity and 11-2 to non-conference, cross-town rival Xavier on a cold and blustery day at American Legion Field in Brooklyn.

Final scores notwithstanding, both games were close.  Varsity was down 0-1 going into the top of the seventh but Xavier struck for five to put the game away.  JV was tied 1-1 until the 3rd thanks to an RBI single by Angel Espinal but in the fourth errors and miscues lead to seven Xavier JV runs.

The next game will be played at American Legion Field on Thursday, March 30th at 4pm against Cardinal Hayes.

LA SALLE ADVANCES TO FEDERATION CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL

East Village, N.Y., March 24, 2017 – In a thrilling matchup between two New York City teams, La Salle Academy varsity basketball defeated Fannie Lou Hamer High School 61-47 to advance to the Federation Tournament Final. With today’s win, the Cardinals will face Westhill High School in the Championship Game at 5pm on Saturday, March 25th at the Glens Falls Civic Center. This game will also be broadcast live on Spectrum Sports.

A game that began with a 19-5 La Salle run, the Cardinals would extend the lead to 11 points entering the 4th quarter behind the play of Isaiah Allen-Smith and James Bouknight. The Cardinals would solidify the win with strong defense and great teamwork down the stretch. Isaiah Allen-Smith led the way with 18 points and 14 rebounds, while James Bouknight added 12 points and Justin Rivera added 10 points. Senior and varsity team captain, Bryce Council, controlled the tempo with 8 points and 9 assists.

“What an incredible season and four years this has been,” Council exclaimed. “We have been counted out and overlooked…but we have been working towards these goals for years. The last two years we fell short, so this year our mindset was to be mindful of that feeling we had after those losses and use that as a part of our fuel to drive us. We are focused, we are on the same page, we play for each other, we want to win and ‘We Are La Salle!’”

“This team has been a true pleasure to coach and the focus of the team is to be the very best we can on and off the court, something we have achieved thus far,” said Head Coach Jerome Pannell. “It is, quite honestly, a true honor to be able to be a part of the resurgence of La Salle, not only the basketball program but the institution as a whole. La Salle Basketball has a rich tradition and this team, especially these seniors, are a true example of resilience, perseverance and the work ethic that is a pillar of being true Lasallians.”

La Salle Eliminated from Playoffs

Tuesday, May 31, 2016, Brooklyn, NY – In the end, only one team ends the season happy and this year it just wasn’t in the Cards as La Salle lost 2-5 to Nazareth and was eliminated from the 2016 CHSAA A Division Varsity Playoffs, yesterday at American Legion.  The Kingsman move on to the Championship round against Scanlan.  La Salle fell behind 0-2, after one inning, which took some of the opening game fight out of the Cardinals but each time they rallied to put up single runs in the second and third innings, Nazareth answered with runs of their own to maintain their lead.  After that it was quite routine as both teams traded zeroes for the last four innings.  It’s not that the Cardinals played bad in an elimination game as much as they did not play to moment and lost to a senior team that had been there before.  Senior, Chris Pimental, pitching his last game in a LSA uniform took the lost but was solid over six innings giving up seven hits, five runs (four earned) with 10 strikeouts against two walks.  Unfortunately, Nazareth’s Alvarez was a tad better on this day as he struck out 12 Cardinals against two walks en route to the win.  Angel, Billy, Jayson and Gil got the hits for La Salle with Jayson delivering the hardest blow, a line drive double to right in the second but that was about as good as it got as they Cards went down in order over the final four frames.  It was a good season that came up short, La Salle finished the season 11-6 with the playoff losses, which will hopefully feed the Varsity birds for the 2017 season. To the seniors playing in their final game, thank you for being an exemplary student-athlete. We are La Salle.

LSA For the Win, JV Cardinals 2016 CHSAA A Division JV Baseball Champions

jv championships 2

Brooklyn, NY, May 20, 2016 – The La Salle Academy JV Cardinals successfully defended their 2015 title with a 5-3 victory over Nazareth to win the 2016 CHSAA A Division JV Baseball Championship at American Legion Fields.   It was a typical game in the early part, with LSA and Nazareth going back and forth with the scoring. The Cards jumped up 1-0 in the top of the first only to see Nazareth score two in the bottom of the first, then add one more in the second.  But unlike the previous three meetings this year (all loses by the Cardinals), LSA did not kick the game away with errors and let the Kingsmen back in, holding them off the boards for the final five innings.   A day after Carlos Flores pitched a No-Hitter in the semi-final game, three LSA pitchers combined on a two hitter.  Franklin Olivares picked up the win going four innings of 1 hit ball with three runs, one earned run, five strikeouts and seven walks.  The captain, Nicholas Brito, got the final two outs with the tying run on base to pick up his second save of the season.  However, the pitching star of the day was Matthew Camacho, who came on in relief of Olivares in the bottom of the fifth to avenge the early ghosts of games against Nazareth past.  His two and a third innings (1 hit, 5Ks, 1BB) were a crucial hold against a team that had beat him twice this year.  For his heroics (he also had an RBI), he was awarded the Championship Angry Bird.

jv championships 1

Offense sells tickets; La Salle racked up 11 hits. Brito, Nicholas Rivera, Jordan Garcia and Roberto Liz lead the way with two hits each. But defense wins championships; and on this championship day LSA committed only two errors compared to the 21 in the three previous Nazareth games.  On the day the Angry Bird Movie hits the theatre (coincidence of fate), La Salle won only its second JV title in the schools 100 plus years.  It’s the first City Championship under Head Coach, Chris Washington.  Coach Alex Cordero, who won last year’s title, is now the Head Varsity Baseball coach at La Salle.  With the victory La Salle JV finishes the season above .500 at 9-8 (5-4, 2nd Place in the division – 2-0 in the playoffs) plus a CITY CHAMPIONSHIP.

Flores’ No-No Propels JV Cardinals Into Championship Game

May 19, 2016, Brooklyn, NY – It wasn’t a perfect game but it wasn’t far from it as Carlos Flores pitched a no-hitter to propel the La Salle Academy JV Cardinals to a 12-0 knockout (5 innings) win over St. John’s Prep and a spot in the CHSAA A Division Championship Game at American Legion Field.  Flores was stellar posting nine strikeouts against only three walks and had three 1-2-3 innings out of five.  His pitching was supported by an LSA offense that jumped out of the gate in the first inning batting around and scoring six runs.  Jimmy Muniz and Jordan Garcia each went 3 for 3 to pace the JV birds. Christain Cueto added three RBIs and two runs.  But the day and the Angry Bird belonged to Carlos Flores (W, 5 Inns – No Hits, No Runs, 9 K, 3 BB, HB).

Next Up for La Salle JV it’s the CHSAA A Division JV Championship Game against Nazareth (1 seed) TODAY, Friday, May 20th at American Legion Field, 10200 Seaview Ave, Brooklyn, NY.  First Pitch is 4pm.

LSA Closes Out the Handball Season

On Tuesday, La Salle took away two wins after St. Raymond’s had to forfeit a doubleheader due to their coach on medical leave. LaSalle was scheduled to play St. Raymond away. Both JV and Varsity handball teams finished the regular season at 4-10. La Salle awaits the final standing to see if they make it to the playoffs.

Cardinals Lay a Turkey Against Nazareth

Brooklyn, NY, May 10, 2016 – In what could only be described as a letdown after Saturday’s thrilling victory over Scanlan, the La Salle Academy JV Cardinals were a complete no-show for their game against Nazareth losing 0-8 to the Kingsmen at American Legion Fields.

The loss clinched first place (CHSAA – A Division) for Nazareth while putting LSA (4-4) in danger of dropping to the number three seed for the upcoming playoffs.

Matthew Camacho took the loss despite giving up only four hits.  Again, against Nazareth, the Cardinals’ errors and walks proved to be the difference.  In the three games against the Kingsmen, La Salle has committed a total of 21 errors.

The lone bright spot on offense was Nicholas Brito who went 2 for 4 at the plate.

This Week’s Handball Results

On Tuesday, May 10th, La Salle played against St. Francis Prep at home and lost the game.  However, freshmen Ian Lucero/Jancarlos Flores won their double match at the JV level.  It was their first individual victory this season.  Derek and Jason Criollo continued to impress with a hard-fought battle on the Varsity double match.  The score was 21-18 as they are just a few points away with a victory.

Thursday, May 12, 2016-La Salle came up in the short end in their game against McClancy.  However, freshmen pair Ian Lucero/Jancarlos Flores won their double match yet again.  This gives them 2 wins in the last 2 games.  Overall, the entire freshmen group improved drastically since the beginning of the season.  With no experience to handball prior to last month, the improvement is stunning.

JV Birds Roll a Ten in Win Over St. John’s Prep

Astoria, NY, April 28, 2016 – Trailing 2-8 going into their last at-bat, the La Salle Academy JV Cardinals erased a six run deficit with 10 runs in the top seventh to defeat St. John’s Prep 12-8 at ICYP Field.  Their amazing comeback keeps them in sole possession of second place in the CHSAA – A Division with a 4-2 record (5-6 overall).

After doing nothing for the first five innings and being thoroughly outplayed by a St. John’s team looking to prove they were better than how they played on Tuesday, LSA found themselves in an early 0-2 hole at the end of one thanks to errors and misplays in the field.  On top of all that, St. John’s had an encouraging fan base of students and parents from the neighborhood that got even louder as SJP seeming had the game on ice after scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up six.

The magical LSA seventh all started with a pinch walk and was highlight by seven base hits, seven stolen bases, including Matthew Camacho’s almost steal at home which forced a balk, an infield fly (that turned into a run) and some clutch two out hitting to keep the line moving.

Camacho (W) picked up the win with four innings of work in relief of Nicholas Rivera and Nicholas Brito pitched a perfect seventh to secure the win. All toll the Cardinals only surrendered two hits, both to J. Leston, who was the hard luck loser.  Brito (3 hits), Jimmy Muniz (2 hits) and Christian Cueto (2 hits) had outstanding day at the plate, the Angry Bird, was given to Jordan Garcia (3 RBIs) for his two out 2 RBI opposite field single that provided the final margin of victory.

Next Game: Saturday, April 30th vs Scanlan at American Legion at 12 noon.
