La Salle Academy has established a one-of-a-kind partnership with the prestigious Cooper Union, located just steps away. Every spring and fall, many La Salle students participate in an exciting Lab Series at Cooper Union. For example, a Motorsports Lab Series, taught by a team of Cooper Union undergraduates, showed La Salle students how to design and build race cars. Qualified La Salle sophomores and juniors are invited to attend this prestigious six-week summer program at no charge. La Salle’s partnership with Cooper Union gives students the opportunity to experience hands-on engineering design and development, biomedical and genetic engineering, and more. Students participate in the college’s elite Saturday Program, which focuses on drawing, painting, graphic design, sculpture and architecture. This is one of the many strategic partnerships La Salle Academy has established in the last few years.
Yesterday afternoon, a group of La Salle boys, Daniel Baker in particular, rang the closing bell at NASDAQ. This group of young men joined their mentors from Mentoring USA program, and afterschool program at La Salle Academy. The soccer team won their first game of the season today by the score of 6-2 over St. Edmund’s. Five different players scored goals, including two from Senior Cristian Perez and one from Junior Jayden Lucas, Junior Eduardo Torres, Sophomore Bryan Otavalo and Senior Damiano Nicolosi. It was a very well-played game by all 25 players as everyone got into the game and produced. This brings our record to 1-1 and our next game is Wednesday. Go La Salle!
Nearly 30 La Salle students gathered together on Mulberry Street to march in the San Gennaro Festival Parade in Little Italy on Saturday, September 12. Many of La Salle’s staff and faculty, including President, Dr. Catherine Guerriero, and Dean Ray Polanco, both cheered alongside the boys, representing La Salle with great pride.
Thanks to the generosity of alumnus James Detura ’74 and his wife Trish, each freshman at La Salle Academy received a brand new Microsoft tablet – a key learning tool in today’s world. The donors, members of the board, faculty, and staff were present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony to present the tablets. Words of wisdom and encouragement were shared with the freshmen to empower the new students to enhance their education using this new technology.
A Microsoft team is on campus this week to provide faculty and students with the latest training to enhance the learning experience for every student by integrating the use of tablets in the classroom. Students will be able to explore their education in a unique, creative and innovative way while gaining new skills in areas such as digital literacy, social media, and communication.

Congratulations to the Class of 1965, which celebrated its Golden Anniversary at the Holiday Inn Midtown on Thursday, June 4th. Following the reception, our alumni attended graduation at St. Jean Baptiste Church, where they received an anniversary certificate in remembrance of their time at alma mater. It was an honor to commemorate our Brothers’ Boys, who walked the halls of La Salle 50 years ago!
It’s hard to believe that it’s already graduation time. I’m so proud of all of our Seniors. They have accomplished so much already and are only just beginning. We’re proud to send them out into the world, knowing how much more they will achieve.
I know that the education, both moral and intellectual, La Salle has provided will serve these boys well as they move out into the world. These Seniors have been here as we pioneered our La Salle in the City and La Salle Works programs and as we welcomed our current School President, Catherine Guerriero.
The Class of 2015 has more than academic and cultural accomplishments; they’ve also seen great success on the athletic field. They’ll keep all of these experiences and the knowledge gained with them as they go on to the great institutions of higher learning listed below.
We celebrate our new graduates but also those have come before- celebrating Graduation Anniversaries with our alumni as well. The Brothers’ Boys may leave La Salle but the Lasallian spirit will always be with them. Remember, We Are La Salle!
Thank you to all that support La Salle and these wonderful students!
Looking forward to the future,
Brother William

It has been a fun-filled and thrilling May at La Salle Academy! Our two major annual events-the Spring Gala and Athletic Hall of Fame Scholarship Dinners-brought together alumni, students, family and friends to celebrate our proud Lasallian tradition and 167 years of educational excellence.
Our 24th Annual Spring Gala and Scholarship Dinner on May 3rd was a full house. In all, more than 300 guests filled the Yale Club on a beautiful Sunday evening in New York City. Friends and family members of our Principal, William Johnson, FSC, first President Carl Malacalza, FSC, and Rick Taiano ’83, attended the 24th Annual Spring Gala to honor these remarkable men for their service to our beloved school in the spirit of St. John Baptist De la Salle. More than $350,000 was raised to benefit the boys of La Salle Academy and will go towards the school’s scholarship fund.
The 28th Annual Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner chaired by La Salle’s legendary basketball coach and alumnus, Bill Aberer ’67, was a great success. More than 150 alumni and friends packed the gymnasium on “Second and Second” on Friday, May 8th, to pay tribute to this year’s Hall of Fame honorees:
Alumni were especially pleased to see La Salle’s former Field Events coach of 20 years, Tom Burns, who accepted the award in memory of Ian Drayton ’76.
All of the proceeds from this year’s Athletic Hall of Fame Dinner will go to the Buckley-Aberer Scholarship Fund established in January 2015.
If you missed these two momentous events, don’t worry. There’s more to come! Please save the dates for our Staten Island Yankees Reception on Friday, July 17, and our 21st Annual Cardinal Classic Golf Outing on Thursday, September 24th. We’ll give you more details as soon as possible!
The La Salle Academy Track and Field team has competed in six meets this outdoor season- progressing in leaps and bounds along the way. The Sophomore 4×100 team has run a time of 51.13 seconds as of May 5, 2015, tying us with Cardinal Hayes for the fastest sophmore 4×100 time in The Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island. Not too far behind is our Sophomore B 4×100 meter relay running a time of 52.76 seconds, the fifth fastest time in our section.
Our Varsity sprint squad has been invigorated by the emergence of Senior Varsity Basketball player Stephon Riley. Stephon, this year’s MVP, anchored our 4×200 relay into victory after being behind by 10 meters going into the anchor leg.
This Saturday, May 16, 2015, our Running Redbirds hope to qualify for the city championship track meet in the NY Sectional Championships held at Mount St. Michael High in The Bronx.
La Salle Academy continues to enjoy an incredible baseball season. The Varsity baseball team has locked into the division first place honors- and second place in the overall CHSAA All League rankings- as it continues to crush its opponents. On Friday, Varsity defeated Sacred Heart with a score of 14-1 and the next day beat Bishop Loughlin 15-3. Meanwhile, Junior Varsity emerged victorious over Scanlan 7-6 on Saturday and has clinched first place in the regular season standings.
Both teams rank first in their respective CHSAA A Division Intersectional Baseball standings, a feat the Cardinals have been waiting close to 20 years to duplicate! Go Cardinals!
On Tuesday, April 28, 2015, the JV Baseball team beat Scanlan 9-2, with Adrian Santos going 2 for 3 at the plate with 2 RBIs.
The Varsity team beat St. John Prep 12-1. Luis Nieves pitched a great game!
La Salle Baseball won a double header on Saturday, beating Scanlan 9-1 and Cathedral 10-3. The Varsity Baseball team is now 4-0!
Congratulations to Mike Lenaham and Jayson Polano on their great performances.
On April 21 the La Salle Academy Track team competed in the Fordham Prep Developmental Meet #2, held at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island. The Running Redbirds had their best showing of the season thus far- coming home with 2 relay medals and 4 individual medals. This meet’s standout performer was Senior Tyler Martin, winning an individual medal in the 200 meter dash, placing 3rd in his heat and anchoring the 4×100 meter varsity relay to medals less than an hour later. He was accompanied by fellow seniors Marcel Brown, Adrian Corbin, and fellow medal winner in the varsity 400 meter run, Stephon Riley. The Cardinal Sophomores also won medals in the 4×100 this team consisted of Kyle Kenny, Ryan Baizar, Nelson Millwood, and Victor Cherry. Other medal winners were Sophomore Erik Saavedra in the sophomore 400 meter dash, running a time of 57.4 seconds. This places him on the varsity 4×400 meter relay team. Senior Damien Troncoso placed 3rd overall in the Varsity 400 meter dash. The Track and Field team will be competing again on Monday April 27 at Icahn Stadium in the CHSAA Weight and Novice Intersectional Championship.
The LaSalle Senior Class just returned from a worldwind tour of Washington DC this past weekend, and oh what a time we had! In addition to the this shot below outside the White House, we had a private tour of the Capitol, the National Archives, Arlington National Cemetery (where we witnessed the phenomenal changing of the guard), the FDR Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, the Korean War Memorial, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the Martin Luther King Memorial, and the entire Smithsonian Museum Complex (four museums!). The boys had a glorious time!
Special thanks go to LSA Business Manager Mary Ann Glassen and Dean Ray Polanco for putting the trip together. It was top flight!
GO LASALLE !
La Salle’s Varsity Baseball Team is kicking off the season strong- they are now 3-0 after they beat Sacred Heart 10-3 on Wednesday. Way to go Cardinals!!
On April 18th, 2015, La Salle competed at the Big Blue Track and Field Classic held at St. Joseph by the Sea on Staten Island.
Our Sophomore athletes began the day running the 1600 meter relay. The A Relay placed 4th in their heat with a time of 4:10! Congratulations to J’nie Williams, the outstanding performer with an individual time of 59.44, Erik Saavedra, Reggie Outlaw, and William Cruz. The Lasalle B Relay ran a time of 4:45, placing 7th! This relay was comprised of Bryce Council, Kyle Kenny, Ryan Baizar, and Nelson Millwood.
The Running Redbirds also competed in the championship 4×100 meter relay placing 3rd. New varsity member J’nie Williams was joined by Seniors Marcel Brown, Tyral Stephenson and Tyler Martin.
La Salle will compete again in Part 2 of the Fordham Prep Developmental Meet on Tuesday, April 21, at Icahn Stadium on Randalls Island. The race is on to grab a spot as one of the four legs of the coveted Varsity 1600 meter relay, which has been the premiere event for Lasalle Academy over the past four seasons!
Juniors- Please remember that we will be holding a College Fair in the gym on Friday, April 17, 2015. More than 75 colleges, local and out-of-state, will be represented.
The fair will run from 9:00am-11:15am. Please stop by the gym and explore the exciting college options!
The JV baseball team also won their Opening Day game. La Salle’s 18-1 victory against Scanlan is even more impressive when you consider that Scanlan has been JV champs for 3yrs in a row. Julian Nieves pitched a 2-hitter and was also 3 for 4. All the guys on the team did great work from start to finish.
We’re excited to watch these two teams through the rest of the season. Let’s go Cardinals!
On a bitterly cold February 19th at 5am, 11 members of the French Club and chaperones waited with excitement for our Super Shuttle to get to LaGuardia Airport, bound for New Orleans, Louisiana. By approximately 12:30 pm we arrived at Louis Armstrong Airport, our tour bus guide greeting us warmly (as did the warmer weather!)… and so our educational and fun adventure in New Orleans began!
After our arrival to hotel, located near the French Quarter, we began a walking tour to the historic French Quarter, also known as The Quarter or Vieux Carre. This is the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans, known for its Spanish influenced windows and balconies. It was founded in 1718 and has National Historic Landmark status. We realized because of the natural cobblestone streets that it’s best to have comfortable shoes while walking in this neighborhood. The walking tour continued to Café du Monde, open 24 hours a day, world-known for its beignets and Café au Lait. One can wait on a line forever to try these treats. We were also amazed to see and enter St. Louis Cathedral, the oldest Cathedral in America. The evening ended with a walk to Mulate’s Restaurant for authentic Cajun Music, with a Cajun band and locals engaged in Cajun dance.
Our 2nd full day started with a hot and free breakfast buffet in the hotel and greetings from our tour guide, Ms. Marti. The 2nd day included a trip to Mardi Gras World, where floats and large figurines from the parade are stored. A history of Mardi Gras was shown via a short film and we had a taste of King Cake, a colorful cake associated with the pre-Lenten celebrations of Mardi Gras. After lunch, the afternoon and evening tours with our tour guide and tour bus included a trip to the Evergreen plantation- which includes twenty original slave quarters. This was an educational and reflective part of our trip. Later that evening we ate dinner at the original Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant. Before returning to the hotel we ended the evening with an walking tour by a local guide called the Vampire and Ghosts tour!
The final day, after breakfast and before our departure to the airport, we had the opportunity to engage in a tour without our tour guide to the French Market to pick up last minute souvenirs and the opportunity to eat more local fare- from Gumbo to Andouille Sausage with Rice and Beans, to talk to local artists and to purchase original art work at great prices. This was an unforgettable trip, from listening to Jazz musicians in the streets to historic landmarks. Our biggest problem… if only we could have stayed longer! This is a city that you need to visit for at least a week and still return for more adventures.
Due to the fire that occurred on 7th Street and 2nd Ave, La Salle Academy will be closed tomorrow March 27th 2015 and the dance will be rescheduled to a later date.
The Freshman, led by alum Jamaal Smith, overcame key losses of going into the playoffs was still able to advance to the Freshman City Championship, looking to secure LaSalle’s first Frosh City Championship since 1965. A deep squad, the Freshman would finish tied for 1st place in the division going into the playoffs. Although the Freshmen would fall to Regis in the City Championship and endure a tough loss, it was an incredible season as the team finished 12-9 and this class leaves us with much hope for the future of the program.
The Junior Varsity team had a very good year, led by alum & year Coach Steven Cruz. Finishing the season off at 14-10 & third place in the division, the JV squad had a well-balanced roster that included 4 freshman and made a run to the city semi-finals. Despite falling to Regis in the semi-finals, the JV showed great resolve, showing the hard work and dedication necessary to continue to grow and develop.
The Varsity team enjoyed a bounce back season improving on the previous year’s mark of 5-17 with a 15-10 overall mark under the guidance of 1st year Head Coach Jerome Pannell. Led by Seniors Brian Bass and Stephon Riley, the Varsity finished 3rd in the division, eventually falling to Salesian High School in the City semi-finals. The Varsity spent the vast majority of the season in 1st or 2nd place in the Division and began the process of establishing a new foundation for LaSalle Basketball. While the loss was disappointing, the Cardinals are poised for the future, returning 4 of the top 6 players.
Seniors Brian Bass & Stephon Riley as well as Sophomore Reggie Outlaw for being voted to the CHSAA ‘B’ All League Team
Senior Brian Bass has been selected to represent the CHSAA in the 2015 Mayor’s Cup. Brian is one of 14 senior players selected from the entire CHSAA, regardless of League classification(AA, A, B).

La Salle Academy celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in a big way this year! Our alumni kicked off the festivities with a brunch hosted by alumnus Martin J. Cottingham ’88 at the office of Avison Young on Sixth Avenue. Alumni from almost every decade were at the brunch to reunite and reminisce as their excitement built for the big march on Fifth Avenue. The brunch was followed by the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Nearly all the members of our student body convened with alumni on 46th Street to proudly represent La Salle on St. Patrick’s Day. New York City heard us—we are La Salle!!
