March 2019 Newsletter
Another amazing month at La Salle. Here’s what happened this March…
Students, alumni, family and friends all joined us on Saturday, March 16th for our annual St. Patrick’s Day Brunch and Parade. We kicked off the morning with breakfast hosted by alumnus Marty Cottingham ’88 and then made our way to midtown, where we marched 200 strong led by the La Salle Academy Band in the famed New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade! Check out photos here.
Our annual Career Day took place on Friday, March 22nd at the school. Over 100 guest speakers attended to share their career advice with our eager students in their classes. We also had a special guest, Anré Williams, Group President of Global Merchant & Network Services at American Express, join us as the keynote speaker. Thank you to Ann Straub for organizing this fantastic event!
Through La Salle Partners, we offer a college-level Advanced American and New York Politics course that is aligned with one of our partners, Civic Spirit. This month, the class received a visit from Manhattan Deputy Borough President, Matthew S. Washington, who discussed the importance of community engagement and their roles in NYC.
In keeping with our school’s Catholic charism, the junior class participated in their annual retreat at Old St. Patrick’s Cathedral this month. The experience included a private tour of the catacombs! Special thanks to our Campus Ministry team, Jerome Pannell and Nicholas Di Iorio, and religion faculty, Vincent Estevez and Deacon Darrell Buono, for providing a faith-filled opportunity for our boys.
As part of our La Salle in the City programming, our school’s newspaper team took a trip to the New York Post offices with English Department Chair and veteran educator at LSA, Patricia Toney. Each year, our students receive a private tour of the newspaper’s HQ, where they learn the ins and outs of the newspaper industry and how the Post operates.
A select handful of La Salle students had an amazing day last weekend with Board Chair and alumnus Salvatore LaRocca ’82at Madison Square Garden for the New York Knicks game! This unique opportunity is part of our La Salle Mentors programming. Special thanks to Mr. LaRocca for showing us what leadership in action really means.
These kids deserve every bit of these experiences and more. Thank you all for making it possible! Please consider attending our 28th Annual Spring Gala on Thursday, May 9th to keep the momentum going. This important event helps us raise significant amounts of scholarship funding each year for young men like those featured above.
Saint John Baptist de La Salle, pray for us! Live, Jesus, in our hearts. Forever!
