LSA JV Baseball Win Big in Late Innings
Thursday, April 19, 2018 –The La Salle Academy JV Cardinals used two big innings to break open a close game for a 17-5 victory over St. John’s Prep on a chilly day at Elmjack Little League in Queens.
The Cardinals batted around in the fifth and sixth innings plating five and seven runs respectively, which put the game out of reach and secured a victory for Angel Espinal in relief of Elijah Bridgett. On offense, La Salle’s 3-4-5 hitters (Espinal-Eddy Caba-Bridgett) went a combined 6 for 14 with eight RBIs.
Varsity Baseball Victorious in Early Season “Home & Home” vs. St. John’s Prep
Wednesday, April 11, 2018 – Queens, NY – Playing on back to back days the La Salle Academy varsity baseball earned a league victory with a 20-3 four inning knockout of St. John’s Prep at Elmjack Little League.
The Cardinals got off to another slow start, failing to score, in the top of the first, but made up for it in a big way batting around three times in two innings (twice in the fourth inning) and putting up a 14 spot in the fourth.
Julian Nieves, got the win striking out seven over three innings of 2-hit ball. The offense was paced by Nicholas Brito (3 for 3, 2B, 2 RBI), Ethan Rosario & Jimmy Muniz, who each had two hits.
Friday, April 13, 2018 – The La Salle varsity baseball team finished off a perfect week of CHSAA ‘A’ division play with a convincing 17-0, five inning win over St. John’s Prep on Randall’s Island.
The victory improves the Cardinals overall record to 3-4 as they remind undefeated in the division. Franklin Olivares got the start and picked up the win.
Varsity Baseball Grinds Out Victory over Loughlin
Wednesday, April 18, 2018, Brooklyn, NY – It was a grind, but in the end the La Salle varsity baseball team came away with a 9-6 victory over Bishop Loughlin at American Legion Fields, to improve to 4-0 in the CHSAA ‘A’ division. Senior, Julian Nieves, went five strong innings to pick up his second victory in as many starts as junior, Franklin Olivares, picked up the save with two solid innings of his own.
The Cardinals jumped ahead 2-0 in the first inning thanks to an opposite field base hit and sacrifice fly by Adrian Santos and Franklin Padilla, respectively. However, the Lions roared back to take a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the inning, thanks to four errors by the Cardinals defense. The errors were a theme for La Salle as they committed a total of 10 for the game. Fittingly, it was La Salle capitalizing on a Loughlin error in the top of the fifth inning to grab the lead and that fueled the victory for the Cardinals.
With the score tied at three, two outs and a man on third, Nicholas Brito (2 for 4) hit a soft pop up on the third base line that was bobbled then dropped by Loughlin opening the flood gates to a five-run inning for La Salle.
No Hitter Sparks Cardinals to 5th Straight Victory
Friday, April 20, 2018 – The La Salle Cardinals made it five straight CHSAA wins with a 10-0 6-inning knockout of Sacred Heart on a chilly day on Randall’s Island. The victory improves La Salle’s record to 6-4 overall and 5-0 in the division.
The Cardinals were led by the junior duo of Franklin & Franklin. Franklin (Olivares) pitched a complete game No-Hitter with 10 strikeouts against one walk. Franklin (Padilla) had two hits and two RBIs, including the game winner single up the middle in the bottom of the sixth.
The Cardinals jumped out to 7-0 lead after two innings on a combination of small ball, Sacred Heart miscues and opposite field base hits by Adrian Santos (1 for 4; 1 RBI) and Cristobal Rivera (2 for 3; Sac Bunt). The Irish only managed to get things going in the top of fifth, but with the bases loaded, Olivares got a lazy flyball to center to end the threat.
NEXT UP:La Salle travels to Bergen Beach in Brooklyn to face St. Edmund Prep on Tuesday, April 24th, first pitch is 4:30pm.
